Blackjack Switch: two hands, one swap

In Blackjack Switch, you play two hands with equal bets and may swap the second card of each hand. In return, blackjack pays only 1 to 1, and a dealer 22 pushes most hands.

In short

Key takeaways

  • Switching can turn two weak hands into two strong ones.
  • The dealer 22 rule costs more than most players expect.
  • Strategy differs from normal blackjack, especially on doubles.
  • The Super Match side bet has a much higher edge.

On the felt

A good switch

  • Hand 1 before

    Hard 16

  • Hand 2 before

    Soft 16

  • After switching

    Hand 1 becomes 21; hand 2 becomes 5 and 6 for 11

Two poor hands become 21 and 11.

How a round works

You place two equal bets. The dealer deals two cards to each hand face up. You may switch the second card of each hand once, then play each hand as normal.

After a switch, a 21 counts as 21, not as blackjack.

When to switch (examples)

Hand 1Hand 2Switch?
T-65-AYes: 21 and 11
T-T9-9No: keep 20 and 18
T-29-AYes: 21 and 11
T-56-TYes: 20 and 11

Compare both options by their strength against the dealer.

The dealer 22 rule

When the dealer reaches 22, all player hands push except a blackjack. Dealer 22 happens in about 7% of hands, so it removes many wins you would have in normal play.

That is why switching is not a free gift.

Strategy differences

Switch strategy doubles less often against high dealer cards, because a dealer 22 can push a winning double. Players also hit some totals they would stand on in normal blackjack.

Use a Blackjack Switch strategy card if the casino allows it.
