In short

Key takeaways

  • Removing the 10s helps the dealer, but the player-friendly rules give most of it back.
  • Your 21 always beats a dealer 21, and your blackjack beats a dealer blackjack.
  • Use a Spanish 21 strategy chart. Regular blackjack strategy costs you money here.
  • Look for tables where the dealer stands on soft 17 and you can redouble.

Key strategy differences

  1. Tip 01

    Hit more stiff hands

With fewer 10s, hard 12–16 bust less often when you hit.

  2. Tip 02

    Double less

Double 11 and 10 against fewer dealer cards than in blackjack.

  3. Tip 03

    Surrender more

Late surrender is a frequent and useful play.

  4. Tip 04

    Chase bonuses carefully

Hit some 5- and 6-card hands to reach a bonus total, as the chart shows.

Why removing 10s matters

A standard blackjack deck has sixteen 10-value cards. Spanish 21 removes the four 10 spot cards, leaving twelve. That cuts your blackjacks and makes doubling on 10 or 11 weaker.

Taken alone, that change would add about 2% to the house edge. The bonus pays and rule breaks give most of that back.

The result is a game close to good blackjack, but only if you use the right chart.

01Rules

What is the difference between Spanish 21 and blackjack?

Spanish 21 removes the four 10 spot cards from each deck. In return, a player 21 always wins, you can double on any number of cards, late surrender is common, and some 21s pay bonuses.

What is the house edge on Spanish 21?

About 0.4% when the dealer stands on soft 17 and about 0.8% when the dealer hits, with correct Spanish 21 strategy and redoubling allowed. Using regular blackjack strategy raises it.

Does a player blackjack beat a dealer blackjack in Spanish 21?

Yes, at most tables. Player blackjack pays 3 to 2 and beats a dealer blackjack. A player 21 also beats a dealer 21.

Can I use a blackjack strategy card in Spanish 21?

Not a regular one. The removed 10s change many decisions, such as when to double and hit stiff hands. Use a chart made for Spanish 21.

Are the bonuses worth chasing?

Sometimes. The Spanish 21 chart already tells you when to hit a 5- or 6-card hand for a bonus. Hitting beyond the chart costs more than the bonus pays back.

Is Spanish 21 better than blackjack?

With good rules and the right strategy, it is about equal to a good blackjack game. It is clearly better than a 6:5 blackjack table.

02At the table

Where can I play Spanish 21?

Many Las Vegas and regional casinos run Spanish 21, often at $10–$25 minimums. Our venue list shows casinos that report blackjack tables; ask the pit which run Spanish 21.

03More questions

What does the Match the Dealer side bet do?

It pays when one or both of your first two cards match the dealer’s upcard, more for suited matches. Its edge is usually around 3–4% with eight decks, higher than the main game.

Can I surrender after doubling in Spanish 21?

Many tables allow double-down rescue: after doubling, you can surrender and lose only the original bet, keeping the double amount. The felt or rules card says if it is offered.

How many decks does Spanish 21 use?

Usually six or eight 48-card decks dealt from a shoe. Games with fewer decks are rare, and the rules matter more than the deck count.
