How often dealers bust

In six-deck blackjack, the dealer busts about 28% of the time. Most busts come with three or four cards.

Big pays for six, seven or eight cards are rare. They add excitement but little to the average return.

Rules that matter

Many tables play the side bet even if you bust or the dealer does not need to play out. Check whether the dealer completes the hand.

Some pay tables add a bonus if you have a blackjack and the dealer busts. Small changes like this shift the edge.

A worked example

You bet $5 on the side bet. The dealer shows a 6, draws to 16 with four cards, then busts with a fifth card.

A five-card bust pays 4 to 1 on this table, so you win $20 and keep your $5. Your main hand is settled on its own.

Why the dealer busts

The dealer must hit until 17 or more. With a weak up card such as 4, 5 or 6, the dealer often draws more cards and busts.

Your own play does not change the dealer cards on the side bet, but other players taking cards changes what comes next.

Over many hands, these effects even out, and the edge depends on the pay table and the deck count.

Pay table comparison

Tables with higher pays for six- and seven-card busts usually lower the pay for three cards. That trade can raise or lower the edge.

Some versions add a blackjack bonus, paying more if you hold a blackjack when the dealer busts.

If the placard does not list the edge, compare it with a published pay table study before you bet.

Managing a side bet

Decide your side bet size before you sit down. A common rule is to keep it at a small share of your main bet.

Side bets swing more than the main game. A few big hits can hide the long-term cost.

If you want to keep your losses low, skip side bets and use basic strategy on the main hand. That gives the lowest house edge at the table.
