Free Bet Blackjack: the casino pays for some doubles and splits
Free Bet Blackjack lets you double hard 9, 10 and 11 and split most pairs without adding money. The casino places a free bet button instead. In return, a dealer total of 22 pushes every bet still in play.

In short
Key takeaways
- A free bet wins like a real one but costs nothing if it loses.

- Take every free double and free split; they never cost money.
- The Push 22 side bet pays only when the dealer lands on exactly 22.

You: pair of 8s
Split for free — a free bet button covers the second hand

Free Bet vs standard blackjack
| Rule | Standard 6-deck | Free Bet |
|---|---|---|
| Blackjack pays | 3 to 2 | 3 to 2 |
| Double 9–11 | Pay to double | Free |
| Split pairs | Pay to split | Free except 10s |
| Dealer 22 | Dealer busts | Push |
| House edge | About 0.6% | About 1% |
The dealer 22 push costs a bit more than the free moves give back.
How the free bets work
When you take a free double or split, the dealer places a lammer or button next to your bet. If the hand wins, the button is paid like cash. If it loses, the dealer simply takes the button back.
Free splits can be resplit, so one pair can turn into several hands for one bet.
Strategy changes to know
| Your hand | Standard play | Free Bet play |
|---|---|---|
| Hard 9 vs 2 | Hit | Double for free |
| 5-5 vs 10 | Double or hit | Double for free |
| 4-4 vs 6 | Split or hit | Split for free |
| A-A vs ace | Split | Split for free |
| Hard 16 vs 10 | Stand or surrender | Usually hit |
With free buttons out, more aggressive play costs nothing.
Why the dealer 22 matters
In normal blackjack, a dealer 22 is a bust and every standing hand wins. Here it pushes instead. About 7% of dealer hands end on exactly 22.
That push is the main cost of the game, and it falls on hands that would have won.
Sequence
Playing a hand
Step 01
Bet as usual
Place your main bet.
Step 02
Check for a free move
Hard 9, 10 or 11, or a pair other than 10s.
Step 03
Take the free option
The dealer places a button.
Step 04
Finish the hand
Hit or stand as normal.
Step 05
Watch for 22
A dealer 22 pushes all live bets.
The Push 22 side bet
Push 22 wins when the dealer finishes on 22. Common pays run around 11 to 1, with an edge near 6% or higher.
It works as a hedge against the push, but it still costs more over time than it pays back.
