NHL period betting: one twenty-minute slice of the game

Period betting lets you bet on a single 20-minute period of an NHL game instead of the full game. The most common markets are the three-way period winner and the period total, often 1.5 goals.

Why ties matter

Over a full game, overtime and shootouts decide every tie. In a single period, nothing breaks the tie, so a 0-0 or 1-1 period is common.

That is why most period winner bets are three-way. You pick home, away or tie, and each has its own price.

Some books offer two-way period lines that refund the stake on a tie. Those pay less, because the tie risk is removed.

Period trends

Second periods tend to have the most goals, because of the long change. Defenders are farther from their bench, so tired players stay on the ice longer.

First periods can be cautious, as teams settle in. Third periods often see empty net goals when a team trails late.

These trends are already in the prices, so a second period over is not a free edge. Check whether the line reflects them.

Rules and settlement

Period bets settle on goals scored in that period only. Overtime is not part of the third period for these bets.

Most books need the period to be completed for action. If a game is stopped, unfinished period bets are usually void.

Empty net goals count, so a late third period goal can flip a three-way bet from a tie to a win.

A worked example

You bet $10 on the first period over 1.5 goals at -115. Both teams average about 3.2 goals per game, and the home team starts its backup goalie.

The home team scores at 4:10. The visitors tie it at 18:45 on a power play. The period ends 1-1 with 2 goals, so the over wins and pays $18.70.

A three-way bet on the home team to win the period would have lost, since the period ended in a tie. A two-way line with tie refund would have returned the stake. That is why the tie price matters so much here.
