NRFI and YRFI: will anyone score in the 1st?

NRFI means No Run First Inning: you win if neither team scores in the 1st. YRFI is the opposite: at least one run scores. It is a quick bet decided in the first half-hour of a game.

How the bet works

The first inning has two halves. The away team bats in the top, the home team in the bottom. NRFI needs both halves to end without a run. YRFI needs just one run from either side.

Because both teams must be held scoreless, NRFI is really two smaller bets in one. If each half-inning has a 73% chance of being scoreless, the chance both are is 0.73 × 0.73, or about 53%.

Lineups are set so the best hitters bat early. The top three or four hitters see the 1st inning almost every game, which is why the first inning scores more than an average inning. Later innings often see the bottom of the order instead.

What drives first-inning scoring

Starting pitchers are the main factor. A pitcher who is sharp early and limits walks and home runs helps NRFI. Some pitchers are known for shaky first innings before they settle in.

Top-of-order hitters matter as much. A lineup with high on-base hitters at the top and power in the 3 and 4 spots makes a first-inning run more likely.

Ballparks and weather play a part. Hitter-friendly parks, warm air and wind blowing out push scoring up. Cold nights and big parks push it down.

Sequence

Making an NRFI or YRFI bet

  1. Step 01

    Check both starters

    Early-inning form.

  2. Step 02

Look at the top 4 hitters

    On-base and power.

  3. Step 03

    Check park and weather

    Wind and heat.

  4. Step 04

    Convert the price

    Odds to implied chance.

  5. Step 05

    Compare books

    Small edges need good prices.

Rules and settlement

If the first inning is not completed, for example if rain stops play before the bottom of the 1st ends, most books void the bet. If the away team scores in the top of the 1st, YRFI wins right away, and some books settle it then.

Listed-pitcher rules may apply. If a named starter is scratched, some books void the bet; others let it stand. Read the house rules.

Because NRFI is priced near even, the book’s margin takes a large share of any edge. Small gains in price add up over many bets, so compare at least two or three licensed books before you bet.

01Basics

What does NRFI mean?

No Run First Inning. The bet wins if neither team scores in the 1st inning of the game.

What does YRFI mean?

Yes Run First Inning. The bet wins if at least one run scores in the 1st, by either team.

Do both teams have to be held scoreless?

Yes. NRFI needs both the top and bottom of the 1st to end with no runs. Rules differ between licensed sportsbooks, so read the house rules.

02Odds

What are typical NRFI odds?

Often near even money, such as -130 to +110, depending on pitchers, lineups and parks.

How do I estimate NRFI chance?

Multiply the chance each half-inning is scoreless. At 75% each, NRFI is about 56%.

Why do first innings score more?

The best hitters bat at the top of the order and almost always come up in the 1st.

03Rules

What if rain stops the game in the 1st?

If the inning is not completed, most books void the bet and return your stake. Rules differ between licensed sportsbooks, so read the house rules.

Does a pitcher change void the bet?

At some books a scratched listed starter voids it; others let it stand, so check.
