Roulette odds and payouts: every bet on one chart
Every roulette bet pays a little less than its true odds. That gap is the house edge: 5.26% on a double-zero wheel and 2.70% on a single-zero wheel.

Key numbers
The numbers that matter
In short
Key takeaways
- Payouts are set as if the wheel had 36 pockets. The green pockets are where the house earns.
- On a double-zero wheel almost every bet carries the same 5.26% edge, so bet choice changes swings, not the long-run cost.
- A single-zero wheel roughly halves the cost of play. Read the wheel before you buy in.
- No betting system changes the edge. Each spin is independent of the last.
On the wheel
Where the house edge lives
Double-zero greens
2 of 38 pockets — the source of the 5.26% edge
Single-zero green
1 of 37 pockets — the edge drops to 2.70%
A straight-up bet
Pays 35 to 1; true odds are 37 to 1 on a 00 wheel
If the wheel had no green pockets, every payout on the layout would be a fair bet.

|---|---|---|
| Double zero (00) | $5.26 | About 190 |
| Single zero (0) | $2.70 | About 370 |
| Single zero + la partage, even money only | $1.35 | About 740 |
Averages over many spins. A single session can run far above or below them.

How to work out any roulette bet
Step 01
Count your numbers
A corner covers 4 numbers. A dozen covers 12. The bet name tells you the count.
Step 02
Count the wheel
38 pockets on a double-zero wheel, 37 on a single-zero wheel.
Step 03
Find the chance
Divide your numbers by the pockets. 4 numbers on 38 pockets is 10.53%.
Step 04
Check the payout
The layout pays (36 ÷ numbers) − 1. A corner pays 36 ÷ 4 − 1 = 8 to 1.
Step 05
Compare
The pay is fixed for 36 pockets. Extra green pockets turn into the edge.

Mistakes that cost money at the wheel
01Chasing a “due” number
A number that has not hit in 50 spins is no more likely on spin 51. The ball has no memory.
02Doubling after losses
Doubling systems run into the table maximum fast. Seven losses in a row on red happen more often than people expect.
03Playing 00 when 0 is nearby
Many resorts run both wheels. The single-zero table may have a higher minimum but costs about half as much per spin.
04Betting the top line
On a 00 wheel the five-number bet carries a 7.89% edge, the worst bet on the table.
Why every bet costs about the same
Take a $1 straight-up bet on a double-zero wheel. In 38 spins you expect one win of $35 and 37 losses of $1. You end $2 down over 38 dollars bet, which is 5.26%.
Now bet $1 on red for 38 spins. You expect 18 wins and 20 losses: again $2 down. The bet size and number of chips change, the cost per dollar does not.

01Roulette odds
What are the odds of hitting a single number in roulette?
On a double-zero wheel your number has a 1 in 38 chance, 2.63% per spin. On a single-zero wheel it is 1 in 37, 2.70%. Either way it pays 35 to 1, which is why the house keeps an edge on every spin.
Which roulette bet has the best odds?
On a double-zero wheel every bet except the top line has the same 5.26% edge. Even-money bets win most often (47.37%), but they do not cost less. On a single-zero wheel with la partage, even-money bets drop to a 1.35% edge, the cheapest bet in roulette.
Is European roulette better than American?
Yes for the player. European wheels have one green pocket instead of two, so the house edge falls from 5.26% to 2.70%. Over 1,000 $10 spins that is roughly $526 versus $270 in expected losses.
How much does a $5 straight-up bet pay?
It pays 35 to 1, so you win $175 and keep your $5 chip, $180 back in total. A fair payout on a 38-pocket wheel would be 37 to 1, or $185 in winnings.
Can a betting system beat roulette?
No. Martingale, Fibonacci and D’Alembert change the size of bets but not the edge on each spin. They trade many small wins for rare large losses, and table maximums stop the doubling before it can recover.
02At the table
Why does red or black lose when 0 hits?
Zero and double zero are green, not red or black, odd or even, high or low. When the ball lands there, every even-money bet loses unless the table uses la partage or en prison, which return half or hold the bet for one more spin.
How do I find a single-zero wheel in Las Vegas?
Look at the wheel itself or the felt: a single-zero layout has only one green 0 at the head. Several Strip resorts run at least one, often at higher minimums. Our venue list below shows casinos that report roulette tables.
03More questions
What does 35 to 1 mean in roulette?
It means you win 35 chips for every 1 you bet, and you keep the original chip. A $10 straight-up winner returns $360 in total. The “to 1” wording always excludes your stake.
How often does zero come up in roulette?
On a double-zero wheel, 0 or 00 lands on 2 of every 38 spins, about 5.3% of the time, or once every 19 spins on average. On a single-zero wheel, 0 lands about once every 37 spins.
