The James Bond strategy: one spread, the same edge

The James Bond strategy splits $200 into $140 on high (19–36), $50 on the 13–18 six line and $10 on zero. It wins on 25 of 37 numbers in European roulette, but it cannot change the house edge.

  • Wins are small; losses are large.
  • On a double-zero wheel the edge doubles.
  • Scale stakes down for lower tables.

How the strategy works

The bet is named after the spy, linked to the books by Ian Fleming. It spreads $200 across three bets so most numbers win. The high bet covers 18 numbers, the six line covers 6 and the zero covers 1.

On a European wheel with 37 pockets, that is 25 winning numbers, or about 67.6% of spins. The other 12, numbers 1 to 12, lose the whole $200. Wins are small, from $80 to $160, while each loss is $200.

The average result per spin is the sum of each net amount times its chance. That comes to −$200 ÷ 37, about −$5.41, or 2.7% of the $200 stake. That is the same edge as any single bet on that wheel.

Same bet on two wheels

American (double zero)381365.8%5.26%

On an American wheel 00 is not covered and also loses.

What a session looks like

Because two spins in three win, short sessions often feel good. But one loss erases about two and a half average wins. Over 37 spins of perfect average results, you would win 25 times for $2,200 and lose 12 times for $2,400.

Streaks happen. The chance of three losing spins in a row is about 3.4% on a European wheel, which on any given night at a busy table is not rare. That costs $600 at once.

Some players add a Martingale and double after losses. That raises the stake fast and runs into table limits, and it still cannot overcome the edge.

Sequence

Trying it at lower stakes

  1. Step 01

    Pick a single-zero wheel

    Edge 2.7%.

  2. Step 02

    Scale the stakes

    Keep the 14:5:1 ratio.

  3. Step 03

    Set a budget

Count losses of the full stake.

  4. Step 04

    Track results

    Wins and losses.

  5. Step 05

    Stop at your limit

    No chasing.

Scaling and table limits

The stakes scale in the ratio 14 to 5 to 1. At $20 total, that is $14 on high, $5 on the six line and $1 on zero. Many tables need at least $5 or $10 on outside bets like high, so check the placard.

Some tables have separate minimums for inside and outside bets. The six line and zero are inside bets, while 19 to 36 is outside, so the smallest legal James Bond bet depends on both minimums.

Online and electronic roulette often allow small chip sizes, which makes the strategy easy to try at low stakes. The edge is still the same as at a live table.
