Roulette call bets: betting sections of the wheel

Call bets cover groups of numbers that sit next to each other on the wheel, not the layout. They come from French roulette and are placed on a racetrack or by calling them to the dealer.

In short

Key takeaways

  • Call bets are just bundles of split, street and corner bets, so each carries the normal house edge.
  • Voisins, tiers and orphelins together cover all 37 numbers on a single-zero wheel.
  • They are offered mainly on single-zero wheels with a racetrack layout.
  • The ball lands in a section by chance; wheel position does not predict the next number.

Why players use call bets

A call bet covers a slice of the wheel with one instruction. Players who like to bet where the ball "should" land find it fast and fun.

The ball does not favor sections. Each pocket has the same chance on each spin.

Sequence

Making a call bet

  1. Step 01

    Find a single-zero table

Call bets are rare on 00 wheels.

  2. Step 02

    Count your chips

Voisins needs 9 units, tiers 6.

  3. Step 03

Call or place on the racetrack

Say "Voisins, five dollars a chip".

  4. Step 04

Wait for the dealer to confirm

    Before "no more bets".

Racetrack layouts

Many single-zero tables add an oval racetrack that shows the wheel order. You place chips on the racetrack, and the dealer spreads them.

Online French and European roulette usually has a racetrack button.

Neighbor bets

A neighbor bet covers a number plus a set count of pockets on each side, such as "17 and two neighbors". That is five numbers and five chips.

Like call bets, they are plain straight-up bets in a group.

Call bet terms

Know before you sit

Voisins du zéro
Neighbors of zero.
Tiers du cylindre
Third of the wheel.
Orphelins
Orphans; the numbers left between voisins and tiers.
Racetrack
An oval layout showing the wheel order.

Cost of a voisins bet

Nine $5 chips on voisins put $45 in action. With a 2.70% edge, the average cost is about $1.22 per spin.

When one of the 17 numbers hits, the payout depends on the bet type covering it; a hit on 0, 2 or 3 pays on the double street chips.

Common mistakes

Thinking sections can be hot
Every spin is independent. A section that hit last spin is no more likely next.
Using the wrong chip count
Each call bet needs a set number of chips. Missing one changes the coverage.
Looking for call bets on a 00 wheel
American wheels have a different order and rarely support call bets.
Calling too late
Bets must be confirmed before the dealer closes betting.

Finals bets

Finals bet on all numbers ending in the same digit, such as finals 7: 7, 17, 27 on a European wheel. They are straight-up bets with a call name.

Each carries the same 2.70% edge as any other bet on a single-zero wheel.

After the 90 seconds

Questions before and after you play

A 90-second guide cannot cover every table moment. Tap a group, then a question — answers are short paragraphs, not one-liners.

01Basics

What are call bets in roulette?

Bets on groups of numbers that sit next to each other on the wheel, such as voisins du zéro or tiers du cylindre.

How many chips does voisins du zéro take?

Nine chips, covering 17 numbers. Two chips go on the 0-2-3 street and two on the 25-29 corner.

What is the tiers bet?

Six split bets covering 12 numbers on the side of the wheel opposite the zero. House rules can vary, so check the table placard or ask the dealer.

02Odds

Do call bets have a lower house edge?

No. They are combinations of normal bets, so each carries 2.70% on a single-zero wheel.

Which call bet wins most often?

Voisins du zéro, since it covers 17 of 37 numbers. It also pays the least per win.

Are wheel sections predictable?

No. Modern wheels are tested for bias, and each pocket has the same chance. House rules can vary, so check the table placard or ask the dealer.

03Where to play

Can I make call bets in US casinos?

Some single-zero tables accept them, usually with chips placed on a racetrack. Verbal-only bets are rare.

Do online games offer call bets?

Many French and European roulette games include a racetrack with voisins, tiers and orphelins buttons.

What is jeu zéro?

A smaller bet covering 7 numbers closest to zero with 4 chips. House rules can vary, so check the table placard or ask the dealer.
