Satellites: small buy-ins that award seats to bigger events

A satellite is a tournament where the prize is a seat in a larger event. A $100 satellite might award one $1,000 seat for every 10 players. Everyone who finishes in a seat position wins the same prize.

In short

Key takeaways

  • In a satellite, every seat is worth the same, so survival matters more than chips.
  • Near the bubble, short stacks often fold strong hands to lock a seat.
  • Seats may be transferable or cashed out depending on the event.
  • Satellite wins can be taxable at their seat value.

Cheat sheet

A bubble fold

Glance the faces — compare in one second.

  1. 1Your hand: A-Q

Strong, but you are 4th of 5 with 4 seats

  2. 2Short stack shoves

They need chips; you do not

  3. 3Fold to lock a seat

Calling risks your seat for no extra prize

Seat math example

EntriesBuy-inPrize poolSeats at $1,000
45$110 ($100 + $10 fee)$4,5004 seats + $500 cash
60$110$6,0006 seats
25$110$2,5002 seats + $500 cash

Leftover money often goes to the next finisher.

Why strategy changes

In normal tournaments, first place pays far more than tenth. In satellites, the last seat pays the same as the first.

So with a big stack near the bubble, you can often fold almost every hand.

Bubble play by stack

StackUsual approach
Big stackFold most hands, pressure medium stacks
Medium stackAvoid big pots with big stacks
Short stackShove to double up
Locked seatFold everything

A locked seat cannot be lost by folding.

Step satellites

Steps let you climb from a small buy-in to a big event over several stages. Top finishers move up a step, and others may replay the same level.

Online sites run steps daily for major series.

Sequence

Entering a satellite

  1. Step 01

    Check the target event

    Date and buy-in.

  2. Step 02

    Check seat rules

    Transferable or not.

  3. Step 03

    Count the seats

    Seats per entry.

  4. Step 04

    Plan bubble play

    Survival first.

Taxes and seats

A seat won in a satellite can count as a gambling win at its face value. Casinos may issue a W-2G if the seat value minus your buy-in reaches $2,000.

Keep records of buy-ins and seats won.

Satellite terms

Know before you sit

Satellite
A tournament awarding seats.
Bubble
The point just before seats are reached.
Step
A satellite level that feeds the next.
Token
A credit used to enter an event.

Re-entry satellites

Some satellites allow re-entry until late registration closes. That adds seats but also raises your total cost, so track how much you spend per seat won.

Is the seat transferable? Some can be used for another event
