NHL overtime: which bets include it

Most NHL moneyline, puck line and total bets include overtime and the shootout. A regulation, or 60-minute, line ignores them and adds the tie as a third outcome.

The 60-minute line

A 60-minute line has three outcomes: home win, tie and away win in regulation. The prices on the teams are longer than the standard moneyline.

If the game is tied after 60 minutes, only the tie wins. Overtime and the shootout are ignored.

Shootouts and totals

A shootout win is scored as one goal for the winning team in the final score. A 3-2 regulation tie that ends in a shootout counts as 4-3, or 7 goals.

So a total of 6.5 can go over through a shootout. Some players prefer totals that settle on regulation only.

A worked example

You bet $10 on the home team at -140 on the moneyline. The game is 2-2 after 60 minutes and the home team wins in overtime.

The bet wins and returns about $17.14. A home bet on the 60-minute line would have lost, since regulation ended in a tie.

How often games go to overtime

In recent NHL seasons, roughly one game in four or five has been tied after regulation. Check current stats, since rates change.

That is why the tie price on a 60-minute line is often around +300 to +350. It implies a chance of about 22% to 25%.

A close matchup of two strong defensive teams can push that chance higher.

Common mistakes

Assuming OT is out
Standard lines include it.
Missing the tie
60-minute lines have three outcomes.
Forgetting shootout goals
They add to totals.
Mixing up playoffs
No shootout.

Puck line and overtime

A team at -1.5 must win by two goals. An overtime or shootout win is always by one goal, so it loses a -1.5 bet.

The +1.5 side wins on any overtime result, since the loser lost by one goal.

So a close game that goes to overtime always helps the +1.5 side, whichever team wins.

Playoff overtime

In the playoffs, overtime is played in full 20-minute periods at five on five. The first goal wins, with no shootout.

Long playoff games can run into a second or third overtime. All of that time counts toward standard moneylines and totals.

Period bets stay tied to the period named. A third period bet settles at the end of regulation, even if the game goes on.
