In short

Key takeaways

  • The Fire Bet is placed before a new shooter starts and lasts the whole hand.
  • Only different points count; making the 6 twice counts once.
  • Most Fire Bets lose when the shooter sevens out early.
  • Its edge is many times higher than the pass line.

How the Fire Bet works

You bet before the come-out of a new shooter. Each time the shooter makes a point, that number is marked. When the shooter sevens out, the bet is settled by how many different points were made.

Making the same point twice adds nothing.

Why it is popular

The Fire Bet is cheap per shooter and offers a life-changing pay for a small stake. A full six-point hand gets the whole table cheering.

Casinos like it because the edge is high and it adds action at no cost to game speed.

Sequence

Placing a Fire Bet

  1. Step 01

    Wait for a new shooter

Bets are taken before the first come-out.

  2. Step 02

Place chips in the Fire Bet box

    Usually $1 to $5.

  3. Step 03

    Watch points

Dealers mark each new point made.

  4. Step 04

    Settle on seven-out

Paid by the number of different points.

Is it ever worth it?

Treat it as entertainment with a known cost. A $1 Fire Bet per shooter costs about 21 cents on average.

Keep it small next to line bets with low edges.

Fire Bet

A sample hand

The shooter makes the 6, then the 9, then the 6 again, then the 4 and the 10. That is four different points: 6, 9, 4 and 10, paying 24 to 1.

Then a 7 rolls. A $5 Fire Bet returns $125 in winnings. Had the shooter made the 5 and the 8 too, it would have paid 999 to 1, or $4,995 on the same $5.

Common mistakes

Betting it large
The edge is about 20%. Large Fire Bets lose money quickly.
Counting repeated points
Only different numbers count.
Missing the bet window
The bet must be placed before the shooter starts.
Ignoring pay table differences
A 10 to 1 pay on four points is much worse than 24 to 1.
