In short

Key takeaways

  • A hop bet is called out to the stickman; it is not printed on most layouts.
  • An easy hop lands one roll in 18 and is paid 15 to 1.
  • A pair is rarer, one roll in 36, which is why its pay doubles to 30 to 1.
  • The pass line with odds costs a small share of what hops cost.

How hop bets are placed

You toss chips to the center and call the bet, such as "Hop the 5-1, five dollars". The stickman repeats it and places the chips.

Because hops are not on the felt, the dealer may confirm the bet before the dice are thrown.

Sequence

Making a hop bet

  1. Step 01

    Pick the dice

Choose two numbers, like 5 and 1.

  2. Step 02

    Toss chips to the center

    Before the dice are out.

  3. Step 03

    Call it out

    "Hop the 5-1."

  4. Step 04

    Wait one roll

It wins only on that exact result.

Hopping the hardways

Hopping 4-4 pays 30 to 1 on the next roll only. The hard 8 bet pays 9 to 1 but stays up until an 8 or 7 rolls.

The hop is faster and more expensive per roll. The hard way lasts longer but has its own high edge.

Some tables pay better

A few casinos pay 16 to 1 on easy hops and 32 to 1 on hard hops, cutting the edges to 5.56% and 8.33%. Ask before betting.

Online craps may list hops in the proposition area with the pays shown.

Floor rules

Hop terms

Know before you sit

Hop
A one-roll bet on an exact dice result.
Easy hop
A combination of two different numbers, two ways to roll.
Hard hop
A pair, one way to roll.
Hopping
Calling a hop bet out loud.

Comparing hops with place bets

A $5 hop on 3-3 for one roll costs about 69 cents on average. A $6 place bet on the 6 costs about 9 cents per decision, and a decision takes several rolls.

The hop pays big when it hits, but per roll it is one of the most expensive bets on the table. Most regular players use hops only now and then.

Hops in craps lingo

Dealers use nicknames for hops. Hop 1-1 is snake eyes, 6-6 is boxcars or midnight, 5-6 is yo, and 1-2 is ace-deuce.

Using the name or the numbers both work. The stickman will repeat the bet to confirm it.

Common mistakes

Thinking a hop is a hardway
A hard 6 bet lasts until a 6 or 7. A hop on 3-3 is settled on the next roll only.
Betting hops every roll
At 100 rolls an hour, even small hops add up to a large expected loss.
Calling too late
A hop called after the dice are out may not be booked. Call early.
Not checking the pay
Some tables pay 16 and 32 to 1. Others pay less. Ask the dealer.

After the 90 seconds

Questions before and after you play

A 90-second guide cannot cover every table moment. Tap a group, then a question — answers are short paragraphs, not one-liners.

01Basics

What is a hop bet in craps?

A one-roll bet that the next roll shows an exact pair of numbers, such as 4-2 or 5-5. You call it out to the stickman.

What does an easy hop pay?

Usually 15 to 1. It can land two ways, such as 4-2 or 2-4, so the true odds are 17 to 1.

What does a hard hop pay?

Usually 30 to 1. A pair like 3-3 lands only one way out of 36. The true odds are 35 to 1, so the pay is short by five units.

02Odds

What is the house edge on hop bets?

About 11.11% on easy hops and 13.89% on hard hops at the standard pays. Better-paying tables cut those figures.

Is a hop bet better than any seven?

Yes. Any seven carries an edge near 16.67%, higher than either hop. Both are still expensive one-roll bets.

Can I hop a 7?

Yes. You can hop 6-1, 5-2 or 4-3 as easy hops, or bet all three at once. Betting all three is close to the any seven bet.

03At the table

Why are hops not on the layout?

Tables leave them off to save space. Dealers know them and book them by voice. Ask if you are unsure.

Are hops working on the come-out?

Yes. One-roll bets work on every roll unless you call them off. Most players treat them as quick side bets.

Can I bet hops online?

Many online and live craps games list them among proposition bets. Pays are shown in the game.
