Craps come-out roll: the first roll of every round

The come-out roll starts each round. A 7 or 11 wins the pass line, a 2, 3 or 12 loses it, and any other number becomes the point.

In short

Key takeaways

  • The pass line wins twice as often as it loses on the come-out roll itself.
  • The house gets its edge after the point is set, when the 7 is more likely than any point.
  • A 12 on the come-out pushes the don’t pass instead of winning it; that push is the house edge on the dark side.
  • The puck shows OFF during the come-out and ON once a point is set.

Once a point is set, only that number or a 7 decides the pass line.

Why the come-out favors you

Of the 12 ways a come-out can end the round at once, 8 win and 4 lose. That is a strong start for pass line bettors.

The trouble starts after a point is set. Every point is harder to roll than a 7, so the pass line loses more of those rounds. The two phases balance out to a 1.41% edge.

Sequence

Betting on a come-out roll

  1. Step 01

    Check the puck

OFF on the table means the next roll is a come-out.

  2. Step 02

Bet the pass or don’t pass line

Chips go on the line in front of you.

  3. Step 03

    Watch the roll

7 or 11, or 2, 3 or 12, settle the line at once.

  4. Step 04

    Point set

The dealer moves the puck to ON over the point. Add odds if you want.

Don’t pass on the come-out

Don’t pass bettors lose on 7 or 11 and win on 2 or 3. A 12 is a push, which is barred to keep the house edge at 1.36%.

Some casinos bar the 2 instead of the 12. The effect on the edge is the same.

Come-out terms

Know before you sit

Natural
A 7 or 11 on the come-out roll.
Craps
A 2, 3 or 12 on the come-out roll.
Point
The number set on the come-out that the shooter tries to repeat.
Seven-out
A 7 after the point is set; the round ends and the dice pass.

A come-out sequence at a real table

A new shooter rolls 11, and the pass line is paid. The next roll is a 3, and pass bets lose. Then a 6 rolls and becomes the point.

The shooter rolls 9, 4 and 8, which do not affect the pass line, then hits a 6. The point is made, pass bets win and the next roll is a fresh come-out.

Common mistakes

Thinking a 7 is always bad
On the come-out, a 7 wins the pass line. It only loses once a point is set.
Betting place numbers at the come-out
Most place bets are off on the come-out by default. Ask the dealer if you want them working.
Skipping odds after the point
The odds bet is the only zero-edge bet in the casino. Leaving it off means all your action carries the 1.41% edge.
Picking up a pass bet after the point
You cannot remove a pass line bet once a point is set. The odds behind it can come down at any time.

Hot tables and cold tables

A table where shooters keep making points is called hot. Each come-out still has the same 22.2% chance of a natural, no matter what happened before.

Streaks feel real, but the dice have no memory. Betting more after a run of wins raises your action, not your odds.

Questions before and after you play

A 90-second guide cannot cover every table moment. Tap a group, then a question — answers are short paragraphs, not one-liners.

01Come-out basics

What is a come-out roll in craps?

The first roll of a new round, made when no point is set. The puck on the table reads OFF.

What wins on the come-out roll?

A 7 or 11 wins the pass line. A 2, 3 or 12 wins the don’t pass, except a 12, which pushes.

What happens if a point is set?

The dealer marks the number with the puck. The shooter keeps rolling until the point repeats or a 7 shows.

02Odds

What are the odds of a 7 on the come-out?

6 in 36, or about 16.7%. Add the 11, and naturals come up 22.2% of the time. It is the most common total.

How often does the come-out set a point?

About two times in three. Points of 6 and 8 are the most common, at 5 ways each.

Which point is easiest to make?

The 6 and 8, at about 45.5%. The 4 and 10 are hardest, at about 33.3%. The 5 and 9 sit in between at 40%.

03At the table

Can a new player shoot on the come-out?

Yes. The stickman offers dice to each player in turn. You must have a pass or don’t pass bet to shoot.

Are come bets the same as the come-out?

No. A come bet is made after the point is set and works like its own pass line bet.

Is the come-out the same online?

Yes. Online craps uses the same rules and dice odds, and the screen shows the puck state.
