Blackjack hard 16: the worst hand and how to play it
Hard 16 loses more money than any other blackjack hand. Stand against a dealer 2 through 6, hit against 7 through ace, and surrender against 9, 10 or ace when the table allows it.

Key numbers
Hard 16 in four numbers
In short
Key takeaways
- Against a 10, standing and hitting lose almost the same amount; hitting is slightly better.
- Surrender saves money against 9, 10 and ace because every other choice loses more than half the bet.
- A pair of 8s is split against every upcard instead of played as 16.
- A three-card 16, such as 7-5-4, is close enough that many players stand against a 10.

Why 16 is so bad
A 16 is too weak to win by standing unless the dealer busts, and too high to hit safely. Any card from 6 through king busts it.
Against a strong upcard, you lose most of the time whatever you do. The goal is to lose the least.

Why you still hit against a 7
A dealer 7 makes 17 or better about three times in four. Standing on 16 wins only when the dealer busts, about 26%.
Hitting busts often, but it gives you a real chance at 17 to 21. Over many hands it loses less.
Card counting and 16
Counters stand on 16 against a 10 when many high cards remain. It is the most famous deviation from basic strategy.
At a neutral count, the hit is correct, but the margin is tiny.
Floor rules
Terms for stiff hands
Know before you sit
- Stiff hand
- A hard 12 to 16.
- Late surrender
- Giving up half the bet after the dealer checks for blackjack.
- Deviation
- A change from basic strategy based on the count.
- Multi-card hand
- A total made with three or more cards.
Hard 16 against a 9
Against a 9, standing on 16 wins only when the dealer busts, about 23% of the time. Hitting gives you about a 38% chance to land on 17 to 21.
The hit still loses more often than it wins, but it costs less than standing. With late surrender, giving up half the bet is better still.
Common mistakes
- Standing on 16 against a 7
- Against a 7 the dealer is strong. Hitting loses less than standing.
- Hitting 16 against a 6
- The dealer busts about 42% with a 6. Stand and let the dealer draw.
- Playing 8-8 as 16
- Splitting 8s turns the worst hand into two hands that start at 8.
- Never surrendering
- Surrendering 16 against a 10 loses $50 per $100 instead of more than $53.

Questions before and after you play
A 90-second guide cannot cover every table moment. Tap a group, then a question — answers are short paragraphs, not one-liners.
01Basic strategy
Should I hit or stand on 16?
Stand against a dealer 2 to 6. Hit against 7 through ace, unless you can surrender against 9, 10 or ace.
Why hit 16 against a 10 when I usually bust?
Standing loses about 77% of the time against a 10. Hitting busts often but wins a little more of the remaining hands.
Should I surrender 16?
Yes against 9, 10 and ace when late surrender is offered. It saves money compared with both hitting and standing.
02Special cases
Is 8-8 a 16?
Count it as 16 only if splitting is not allowed. Basic strategy always splits 8s.
What about soft 16?
A-5 is soft 16. It cannot bust on one card, so you hit or double it instead. Double it against a dealer 4, 5 or 6.
Does a three-card 16 change anything?
Slightly. With 7-5-4 against a 10, standing is close enough that some charts stand. The two-card hit rule is still right for most players.
03At the table
Will other players mind if I hit 16?
Some might grumble, but your play does not change their odds over time. Follow the chart.
Is surrender offered everywhere?
No. Many US tables do not offer it. Check the sign or ask the dealer. Some higher-limit tables add it to draw players.
Does the dealer stand on 16?
No. Dealers must hit 16 and stand on 17. Only the soft 17 rule varies. The dealer has no choice in the matter.
