Blackjack hard vs soft hands: when an ace counts as 11
A soft hand has an ace counted as 11. A hard hand has no ace, or an ace that must count as 1. Soft hands can take a card without busting, so you play them more boldly.

Key numbers
Hard and soft in four numbers
In short
Key takeaways
- One hit can never bust a soft hand, so hitting soft 17 or less costs you nothing on that card.
- A soft hand turns hard the moment counting the ace as 11 would push the total past 21.
- Soft 17 and soft 18 are the two hands players misplay most often.
- Doubling soft hands against a dealer 4, 5 or 6 adds real value that many players skip.
Cheat sheet
Soft and hard hands side by side
Glance the faces — compare in one second.
1Soft 18
Ace counts as 11; stand against 2, 7, 8
2Hard 18
No ace; always stand
3Soft 13
Hit or double; one card cannot bust it
4Ace forced to 1
A-6-9 is hard 16, not soft 26
Basic strategy for soft hands (six decks, dealer stands on soft 17)
| Your hand | Dealer 2 | Dealer 3–6 | Dealer 7–8 | Dealer 9–A |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A-2, A-3 | Hit | Double vs 5–6, else hit | Hit | Hit |
| A-4, A-5 | Hit | Double vs 4–6, else hit | Hit | Hit |
| A-6 (soft 17) | Hit | Double | Hit | Hit |
| A-7 (soft 18) | Stand | Double | Stand | Hit |
| A-8 (soft 19) | Stand | Stand | Stand | Stand |
| A-9 (soft 20) | Stand | Stand | Stand | Stand |
If doubling is not allowed, hit instead, except soft 18, which stands.
How a soft hand turns hard
Say you hold A-5, a soft 16. You hit and draw a 9. Counting the ace as 11 would give 25, so it now counts as 1 and the hand is hard 15.
From that point you play it as any hard 15. Players who forget the switch sometimes stand on what they think is soft 15, or bust a hand they misread.
Sequence
Reading your hand in one second
Step 01
Spot the ace
No ace means a hard hand.
Step 02
Add the ace as 11
If the total is 21 or less, the hand is soft.
Step 03
Otherwise count it as 1
The hand is now hard.
Step 04
Pick the right chart row
Soft and hard totals use different rows in basic strategy.
Why soft 18 is tricky
Soft 18 feels strong, but against a dealer 9, 10 or ace it wins less than it loses. Hitting gives a chance to improve without risk of busting on that card.
Against a 3 through 6, the dealer busts often, so doubling soft 18 squeezes more money from a good spot.

Hand terms
Know before you sit
- Soft hand
- A hand with an ace counted as 11.
- Hard hand
- A hand with no ace, or an ace that must count as 1.
- Stiff hand
- A hard 12 to 16 that can bust with one card.
- Natural
- An ace and a 10-value card as your first two cards.
Common mistakes
- Standing on soft 17
- Soft 17 is never a stand in basic strategy. It is a weak total, and one hit cannot bust it.
- Never doubling soft hands
- Doubling A-2 through A-7 against weak upcards is part of correct play. Skipping it gives back value.
- Standing on soft 18 against a 10
- Against a 9, 10 or ace, hitting soft 18 is better than standing.
- Misreading a hand after a hit
- When a soft hand takes a big card, recount it as hard before you decide again.

01Definitions
What is a soft hand in blackjack?
A hand that contains an ace counted as 11 without going over 21. A-6 is soft 17 because it can also be 7.
What is a hard hand?
Any hand without an ace, or one where the ace must count as 1 to avoid busting. 10-7 and A-6-10 are both hard 17.
Can a hand have two aces and still be soft?
Yes. Only one ace can count as 11. A-A-5 is soft 17: one ace is 11, the other is 1.
02Playing soft hands
Should I ever stand on soft 17?
No. Basic strategy hits or doubles soft 17 against every dealer upcard. Standing on it wins too rarely.
When should I double soft 18?
Against a dealer 3, 4, 5 or 6 in most games. In a game where the dealer hits soft 17, double against a 2 as well.
Should I hit soft 18 against a 9?
Yes. Against 9, 10 or ace, hitting soft 18 loses less over time than standing. One card cannot bust it.
03At the table
What if I cannot double?
Some games limit doubling to certain totals. Where doubling is not allowed, hit the soft hand, except soft 18, which you stand on.
Do dealers announce soft totals?
Many dealers call both totals, like "7 or 17". Online games often show both numbers on screen.
Does a soft hand change insurance?
No. Insurance is a separate bet on the dealer having blackjack and is a poor bet for basic strategy players.
