Blackjack continuous shufflers: no breaks, no counting
A continuous shuffling machine (CSM) puts used cards straight back into the mix after each round. The house edge per hand barely changes, but you play more hands per hour, so you lose more per hour on average.

Answer first
90s| Feature | Hand-shuffled shoe | Continuous shuffler |
|---|---|---|
| Hands per hour | About 60–70 | About 75–85 |
| Shuffle breaks | Yes | None |
| Card counting | Possible | Not useful |
| Edge per hand | Base | Slightly lower |
Key numbers
CSMs in four numbers
In short
Key takeaways
- A CSM makes the game faster, which raises your average loss per hour.
- The edge per hand drops very slightly, but not enough to offset the speed.
- Card counting needs a deep shoe; a CSM resets the cards every round.
- Automatic shufflers that shuffle a whole shoe at once are not the same as CSMs.
On the felt
Cards in a CSM round
Round 1 dealt
Cards go back into the machine
Round 2 dealt
Some round 1 cards may appear again
Round 3 dealt
The same king can show up next round
With a CSM, any card can come back almost at once.
Expected loss per hour at $25 per hand
| Game | Hands per hour | Edge | Expected loss |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shoe, 6 decks | 65 | 0.6% | About $10 |
| CSM, 6 decks | 80 | About 0.6% | About $12 |
| CSM with 6:5 payout | 80 | 2% | About $40 |
Rough figures for basic strategy.
How a CSM works
The dealer drops used cards into the machine after each round. Inside, cards are spread into slots and released in random order.
There is never a cut card or shuffle break, so play is continuous.
Shufflers compared
| Device | What it does | Counting |
|---|---|---|
| Hand shuffle | Dealer shuffles the whole shoe | Possible |
| Automatic batch shuffler | Shuffles one shoe while another is dealt | Possible |
| Continuous shuffler | Mixes cards back every round | Not useful |
Batch shufflers look similar but keep a normal shoe.
Why casinos use them
CSMs speed up the game and remove the shuffle break, which raises hands per hour. They also stop card counting and some forms of cheating.
They are common on lower-limit tables and less common in high-limit pits.
Sequence
Spotting a CSM
Step 01
Watch the discards
Cards go into a machine after each round.
Step 02
Look for a cut card
A CSM has none.
Step 03
Check the shoe
A batch shuffler still deals from a shoe.
Step 04
Ask the dealer
"Is this a continuous shuffler?"
Should you avoid CSMs?
If you only play basic strategy, a CSM costs a little more per hour because of speed. Taking short breaks evens that out.
If you count cards, CSM tables are not worth playing.

Shuffler terms
Know before you sit
- CSM
- Continuous shuffling machine.
- Penetration
- How deep into a shoe the dealer goes before shuffling.
- Cut card
- The card marking the end of a shoe.
- Batch shuffler
- A machine that shuffles a full shoe at once.
Common mistakes
- Thinking a CSM is rigged
- CSMs are tested and approved. They change speed, not fairness.
- Ignoring speed
- More hands per hour means more expected loss per hour.
- Counting at a CSM table
- The count resets every round, so it has no value.
- Confusing shufflers
- A batch shuffler still deals a normal shoe.

01Basics
What is a continuous shuffling machine?
A device that returns used cards to the mix after each round, so the deck is never dealt down.
Do CSMs change the house edge?
Very slightly in the player’s favor per hand, by a tiny amount. Faster play outweighs it per hour.
Can you count cards against a CSM?
No useful way. The cards return almost at once, so the count never builds. House rules can vary, so check the table placard or ask the dealer.
02Play
How many more hands do CSMs deal?
Roughly 15% to 20% more per hour, because there are no shuffle breaks. House rules can vary, so check the table placard or ask the dealer.
Do CSMs make blackjack worse?
For basic strategy players, a little worse per hour. For counters, much worse. House rules can vary, so check the table placard or ask the dealer.
Are CSMs used online?
Online games shuffle by software every hand, which works much like a CSM. House rules can vary, so check the table placard or ask the dealer.
03At the table
How do I tell a CSM from a shuffler?
A CSM takes cards after each round and has no cut card. A batch shuffler shuffles a shoe while another is in play.
Can I ask for a hand-shuffled table?
You can ask the floor; many casinos have both types on the floor. House rules can vary, so check the table placard or ask the dealer.
Are CSMs fair?
Yes. They are tested and approved by regulators like any other gaming device. House rules can vary, so check the table placard or ask the dealer.
