Scoring

Every rally scores a point. Sets to 21 must be won by 2, so they can run longer.

Teams switch sides every 7 points in the first two sets and every 5 points in the third.

Beach volleyball has no substitutes, so an injured player cannot be replaced and the pair must play on or retire from the match.

Correct score

ScoreMeaning
2-0Winner takes both sets
2-1Match goes to a third set

Totals

A two-set match often totals around 75 to 80 points.

A third set adds about 25 to 30 points, so totals depend on whether the match goes the distance.

The court is 16 by 8 meters, smaller than indoor, and the ball is slightly larger and softer, which makes long rallies more common.

Sequence

A worked example

You bet $10 on a team at -1.5 sets at +150. They win 21-17, 21-19.

A 2-0 win covers -1.5, so your bet wins and returns $25.

Open hand tips are not allowed on attacks, so players use shots such as the cut or the poke to place the ball away from defenders.

Big events

The Olympics, the World Championships and the Beach Pro Tour draw most betting.

The Beach Pro Tour has Elite 16, Challenge and Futures tiers.

Top pairs play the Elite 16 events.

Common mistakes

Ignoring the wind
It changes play.
Using indoor form
It is a different game.
Forgetting the third set
Totals jump.
Missing partner changes
Pairs split often.

Heat

Hot sand and sun tire players over a long match.

Teams that play several matches in one day may fade late.

Check the schedule before betting later rounds.

Live beach volleyball

Prices swing with each set and after runs of points.

A team that loses the first set can still come back.

Set your stake before play. Blocks count as one of the three touches in beach volleyball, unlike indoor, which changes how teams build their attacks.
