Betting the Kentucky Derby: a big field and big pools

The Kentucky Derby is a 1¼-mile race for 3-year-olds run on the first Saturday in May at Churchill Downs. Up to 20 horses start, which makes it hard to pick and gives exotic bets like the trifecta big payouts.

How horses get in

Horses earn a place through the Road to the Kentucky Derby, a series of prep races that award points. The top point earners fill the field of up to 20, with a few spots for horses from overseas series.

Post positions are drawn in the week before the race. With 20 starters, a main gate and an extra gate are used. Inside posts can get squeezed at the start and outside posts can lose ground on turns, so many bettors watch the draw closely.

The track’s handicapper sets a morning line, an estimate of the final odds. The real odds come from the money in each pool and can change a lot right up to post time.

Exacta box36$6
Exacta box412$12
Trifecta box424$24
Trifecta box560$60

Combinations = n × (n − 1) for exacta, × (n − 2) for trifecta, × (n − 3) for superfecta.

Bets that suit a big field

Win, place and show bets are simplest. In a field of 20, even the favorite often goes off at 4 to 1 or higher, so a win bet on the favorite can still pay well.

Exotic bets combine horses. An exacta needs the top two, a trifecta the top three and a superfecta the top four. With so many horses, these often pay hundreds or thousands of dollars on small tickets.

Boxes and keys control cost. A 4-horse trifecta box costs $24 at $1, while keying one horse on top with four others underneath costs $12. Our key and wheel guide covers how to build these tickets.

Where and how to bet

Derby bets are pari-mutuel, so they go into pools run by the track. You can bet at Churchill Downs, at many racetracks and race books, and online through licensed advance deposit wagering sites in states that allow them.

Future wagers on the Derby open months before the race, with odds that lock in when you bet. If your horse does not run, future bets usually lose rather than refund, except on certain field options.

Takeout, the share the track keeps, is higher on exotic bets than on win, place and show. That is part of why exotic payouts look large: you are paying more for the chance.
