Boxing horses: every order covered

A box covers every order of the horses you pick. An exacta box of two horses wins if they finish first and second in either order. A trifecta box wins if your horses fill the top three in any order.

In short

Key takeaways

  • Boxes are simple but costs grow fast with each horse.
  • Each winning box pays only one combination.
  • Keying a strong horse cuts the cost a lot.
  • Payouts come from a pool, so they are not fixed in advance.

How boxes are priced

Each order is a separate bet. A three-horse exacta box covers six orders, such as 1-2, 2-1, 1-3, 3-1, 2-3 and 3-2. Only one order can win, so five of the six bets lose even when you hit.

That is why a box must pay well to make a profit.

Many tracks allow 50-cent trifectas.

Keys and wheels

A key puts one horse in a fixed spot. A trifecta with a key on top and three others underneath costs 6 bets, against 24 for a four-horse box.

A wheel uses one horse with all others in a spot, which helps when you love one horse but not the rest.

When boxes make sense

Boxes fit races where you like a few horses about equally and cannot rank them. If one horse stands out, a key is cheaper.

In big fields with a strong favorite, boxes often pay less than they cost.

Box
Every order of chosen horses.
Key
One horse fixed in a spot.
Wheel
One horse with all others.
Base bet
Stake per combination.

Partial boxes

Some players box their top two horses in the first two spots and add more horses for third. This costs less than a full box and still covers likely orders.

Most betting apps let you build these with a "part wheel" option.

Superfecta boxes

A superfecta box covers the top four in any order. Four horses make 24 combinations, five make 120 and six make 360, so a 10-cent base bet is common.

At 10 cents, a five-horse superfecta box costs $12. Payouts can be large, but hits are rare.
