Lacrosse betting: spreads, totals and two-point goals

Faceoffs matter

Every goal is followed by a faceoff. A team with a strong faceoff player wins more possessions.

That can swing spreads and totals, since possession leads to shots.

Clearing percentage, the share of times a team moves the ball from defense to offense, is another useful stat for judging how well a team holds possession.

Overtime

Both college and pro games use sudden death overtime. The first goal wins.

Most books include overtime for moneyline, spread and totals. Quarter and half bets do not include it.

The NCAA Division I men's tournament has 18 teams and ends with the final four on Memorial Day weekend in late May.

A worked example

You bet $10 on the underdog at +3.5. They lose 12-10.

Add 3.5 to their score and it becomes 13.5, beating 12. Your bet wins.

The PLL season runs through the summer, with eight teams playing weekend events in different cities before a playoff and championship game.

Man-up chances

Penalties lead to man-up spells of 30 seconds to a few minutes.

Teams that convert man-up chances well can cover spreads in tight games.

College games often see between 15 and 25 total goals, while PLL games can run higher because of the faster shot clock.

Common mistakes

Mixing up college and pro rules
Scoring and clocks differ.
Ignoring faceoffs
They control possession.
Forgetting overtime
It counts for most bets.
Betting where banned
Some states limit college props.

Weather

Outdoor games in rain and wind can lower shooting accuracy.

Early spring college games sometimes see cold, wet conditions. Line moves in college lacrosse can be sharp because markets are small, so compare prices at more than one licensed sportsbook.

Goalie save percentage is a useful stat, since a hot goalie can keep an underdog within the spread for a whole game.

Lacrosse terms

Faceoff
The restart after each goal.
Man-up
A power play after a penalty.
Two-point goal
A long-range PLL goal.
Shot clock
The time limit to shoot.

Live lacrosse

Runs of goals are common, so live prices swing often.

A three-goal lead is not safe, since faceoff runs can erase it quickly.

Many books post alternate spreads and totals for big games, so you can take more goals at a shorter price.

After the 90 seconds

Questions before and after you play

A 90-second guide cannot cover every table moment. Tap a group, then a question — answers are short paragraphs, not one-liners.

01Basics

What is a two-point goal?

In the PLL, a goal scored from beyond the arc about 15 yards out counts for two points.

How long is a college lacrosse game?

Sixty minutes, played in four 15-minute quarters. Rules differ between licensed sportsbooks, so read the house rules.

What is a man-down defense?

The defense played while a team is short a player after a penalty, usually for 30 seconds to a few minutes.

02Rules

Does overtime count for spread bets?

Usually yes. Full game bets include sudden death overtime unless the house rules say otherwise.

Can I bet on college lacrosse everywhere?

No. Some states ban betting on in-state college teams or college player props. Rules differ between licensed sportsbooks, so read the house rules.

Is box lacrosse different?

Yes. The NLL plays indoor box lacrosse with six a side, and totals usually run much higher.

03Strategy

Why do faceoff stats matter?

Faceoff wins give a team the ball, which leads to more shots and goals. Rules differ between licensed sportsbooks, so read the house rules.

Are PLL totals higher?

The two-point goal and short shot clock can push scoring up, even with shorter quarters.

Can a game end in a tie?

No. College and pro games use sudden death overtime until a goal is scored. Rules differ between licensed sportsbooks, so read the house rules.
