Ultimate Texas Hold’em strategy: when to raise 4×, 2× or 1×
In Ultimate Texas Hold’em you get one raise per hand, and the earlier you raise the bigger it can be. Good timing is almost all of the strategy.

Key numbers
UTH by the numbers
In short
Key takeaways
- Raise 4× before the flop with strong hands. Checking good hands to the river gives away most of the value.
- After the flop, raise 2× with two pair or better or a pair that uses one of your hole cards.
- On the river, raise 1× with any hidden pair, or when fewer than 21 cards beat you.
- If the dealer does not qualify with a pair, the ante pushes but the play bet still counts.
On the felt
Three preflop hands
A-4 offsuit
Raise 4× — any ace qualifies
K-4 offsuit
Check — K-5 offsuit is the cutoff
3-3
Raise 4× — pairs 3s and up
Suited hands raise a little lower than offsuit hands because of flush chances.
Pay table

Glance before you bet
| Your hand | Blind pays |
|---|---|
| Royal flush | 500 to 1 |
| Straight flush | 50 to 1 |
| Four of a kind | 10 to 1 |
| Full house | 3 to 1 |
| Flush | 3 to 2 |
| Straight | 1 to 1 |
| Less than a straight | Push |
The blind only pays when you win the hand. It loses when the dealer wins.

If you still checked, raise 1× or fold.
Step 05

Best five of seven cards wins. Dealer needs a pair to open the ante.
Counting dealer outs on the river
When the board is out, look at what the dealer could hold. Count the unseen cards that would give the dealer a better hand than yours.
If fewer than 21 cards beat you, raise 1×. The 1× raise is cheap, and the ante pays even when the dealer does not qualify.
With pure high-card hands, this usually means raising with a high kicker on a dry board and folding when the board plays for everyone.

Mistakes that cost the most
01Checking strong hands preflop
Waiting to raise 1× on the river with AK loses far more than raising 4×.
02Raising 2× with board pairs
A pair on the board is shared with the dealer. Only hidden pairs count.
03Folding too much on the river
Many weak hands are still worth 1×.
04Over-betting Trips
The Trips side bet often carries an edge of 3.5% or more.
Why raising early pays
A 4× raise preflop puts four times the ante at risk when you are a favorite. Waiting until the river means you can only raise 1×.
Simulations show the biggest gains come from raising good hands early, not from avoiding losses on weak ones.

01Strategy
What hands should I raise 4x in Ultimate Texas Hold’em?
Any ace, any pair of 3s or higher, K-2 suited or better, K-5 offsuit or better, Q-6 suited or better, Q-8 offsuit or better, J-8 suited or better, and J-T offsuit. Check everything else.
When should I bet 2x after the flop?
With two pair or better, or with a pair that uses one of your hole cards (except pocket 2s). Also with four to a flush when you hold a 10 or better of that suit.
What is the house edge in Ultimate Texas Hold’em?
About 2.19% per ante with good strategy. Measured against all money wagered, it is about 0.53%, because raises add to the total action.
What does dealer not qualifying mean?
The dealer needs at least a pair to qualify. If not, your ante pushes, while your play and blind bets are still decided against the dealer’s hand.
Should I bet the Trips side bet?
Only for fun. It pays on your own hand being three of a kind or better and carries a house edge of about 1.9% to 3.5% or more, depending on the pay table.
Should I ever raise 3x preflop?
Most strategies say no. When a hand is good enough to raise before the flop, 4× earns more. Some players use 3× to control swings.
02At the table
Can I fold before the river?
No. Before the river you either raise or check. Folding happens only at the final decision, where you lose your ante and blind.
03More questions
What is the Trips bet?
A side bet on your own final hand being three of a kind or better, paid regardless of the dealer. Pays run from 3 to 1 for trips to 50 to 1 for a royal flush on common tables.
How often should I raise 4x preflop?
With the standard strategy you raise 4× on roughly half of all hands. Players who wait for premium hands give up a lot of value.
