How scatters differ from other symbols

Regular symbols must line up from left to right on an active line. Scatters count anywhere on the visible reels, so lines do not matter.

Scatter pays usually multiply your total bet, not your line bet. On a 20-line game at $0.05 per line, 3x total bet pays $3.

Many games place scatters only on certain reels. A game may show them only on reels 1, 3 and 5, so three is the maximum.

Myths about scatters

Seeing two scatters often does not mean the third is due. Each spin is random, and games are allowed to show near misses within set rules.

Scatters do not appear more often after a long dry run. The random number generator has no memory of past spins.

Max bet rarely changes scatter odds. It may matter for progressives, so read the help screen before you raise your bet.

Scatters in the bonus

Many games let scatters retrigger free games. Landing three more during the feature adds spins, often the same number as the first trigger.

Some games use collecting scatters. Each one you land fills a meter that unlocks a bigger feature later in the session.

Persistent games can hold that meter between sessions. Leaving a nearly full meter gives value to the next player.

A worked example

You play a 20-line slot at $0.10 per line, or $2 per spin. The scatter pays 3x total bet for three and starts 10 free games.

Three scatters land on reels 1, 3 and 5, none on a payline. You get $6 from the scatter pay and the free games start at once.

During the feature, three more scatters land and add 10 spins. Your 20 free games pay $38, so the whole trigger returns $44 on a $2 spin. That is 22 times the bet, but it came after about 180 paid spins costing $360. Over a long session, most of the money still goes back to the house.
