How free games are triggered

Most games need three or more scatter symbols anywhere on the reels. Scatters pay on their own and do not need to land on a payline.

More scatters often give more spins. A game may award 10 spins for three scatters, 15 for four and 20 for five.

Trigger rates vary a lot. One game may trigger free games about once in 100 spins, while a high-volatility game may take 250 spins or more on average.

Free games and RTP

The free games round is part of the game’s overall return. In many slots it accounts for a third or more of the RTP, so the base game pays less to fund it. Two games with the same RTP can feel very different if one pays more of it in the free games round.

This is why bonus-heavy games feel streaky. You may lose steadily between triggers, then win a large amount in one round.

The round can also pay very little. Ten free games with no multiplier can return less than one base bet, which is part of the normal swing. A multiplier raises the size of wins in the round, but it only multiplies what the free games land. If the reels give small wins, even a large multiplier gives a small result.

A worked example

You bet $1 per spin on a slot that awards 10 free games for three scatters, with a 3x multiplier on all free game wins. You land three scatters on spin 140.

The scatters pay 2x your bet, or $2. Over the 10 free games, you hit base wins of $4, $1.50 and $6, which the multiplier turns into $34.50.

Spin 7 lands three more scatters and adds 10 spins, which pay another $9. The full feature returns $45.50, after 140 paid spins that cost $140. So one trigger paid back far less than the spins leading up to it cost, which is normal.

Common mistakes

Thinking a bonus is due
Every spin is random.
Raising the bet to chase it
Same odds, more risk.
Confusing promo spins
They have terms.
Ignoring volatility
Swings are normal.

01Basics

What are free games in a slot?

A bonus round in which the game spins for free at your trigger bet, often with multipliers or extra wilds.

How do I trigger free games?

In most games by landing three or more scatter symbols anywhere on the reels in one spin.

Do free games cost anything?

No new bet is taken during the round. Wins are paid at the bet size that triggered the feature. Free games do not take money from your balance, but they are not free of risk, since the paid spins that came before them did cost money.

02Rules

Can free games be retriggered?

In many games, yes. Landing more scatters during the round adds extra spins, up to any limit the game sets.

Are free games part of the RTP?

Yes. The bonus round is built into the game’s overall return, and often makes up a large share of it.

03Strategy

Can I make free games come sooner?

No. Every spin is random, and a bonus is never due, no matter how long it has been since the last one.

Does a bigger bet help?

A bigger bet raises the win size in the bonus but not the chance of triggering it, and it raises your risk.
