Megaways slots: reels that change size every spin

Megaways is a slot design where each reel shows a different number of symbols on every spin, usually 2 to 7. The ways to win are the product of the reel heights, so a six-reel game can reach 117,649 ways.

How Megaways works

On a normal ways game, every reel shows the same number of symbols. On a Megaways game, each reel picks its own height from 2 to 7 on every spin. The number of ways changes each time, and the game shows the count on screen.

A win pays when matching symbols land on adjacent reels from the left, in any row. If three cherries appear on reel 1, two on reel 2 and one on reel 3, that is 3 × 2 × 1 = 6 winning ways, each paying the cherry value.

The mechanic was created by Big Time Gaming and first released in 2016. It has been licensed to many studios, so you will see Megaways versions of many well-known slot titles.

Cascades and volatility

Most Megaways games use cascades, also called tumbles or reactions. Winning symbols vanish and new ones fall in, which can create another win on the same spin. Some games add a multiplier that grows with each cascade.

This structure tends to make results swing. Many spins pay little or nothing, while bonus rounds with growing multipliers can pay hundreds or thousands of times the bet. That is high volatility, so a bankroll can drop fast.

Return to player is usually in the mid-90s, often around 96% online, but it varies by game and by casino. The help screen lists the RTP for the version you are playing.

What to look for

Paytables in Megaways games pay per way, so single wins often look small next to the bet. The big pays come from long cascades and bonus features, not from the base game.

Some games offer a feature buy, paying a set price to jump to free games. Rules on feature buys differ by state and casino, and the RTP for the buy can differ from the base game.

Licensed online casinos in states like New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Michigan list Megaways titles with their RTP and tested results. Play only at licensed sites.
