NFL longest touchdown: betting on the big play

A longest touchdown prop asks whether the longest touchdown in a game goes over or under a yard line, such as 41.5. Most books count all touchdowns, including returns.

Who helps the over

Deep passing offenses and weak secondaries raise the chance of a long score. So do fast returners.

A game with a high total has more scores, and more scores give more chances for one long touchdown.

If no touchdown is scored

Games without a touchdown are rare. Some books settle the under as the winner; others void the bet.

Read the rule before you bet a low-scoring matchup, since it changes the value of the under.

Sequence

Betting the longest TD

  1. Step 01

    Check the total

    More scores help.

  2. Step 02

    Look at big plays

    Deep passes.

  3. Step 03

    Check return teams

    Return scores.

  4. Step 04

    What counts.

  5. Step 05

    Compare lines

    Several books.

A worked example

You bet $11 on the over 41.5 at -110. Late in the first half, a receiver scores on a 52-yard catch.

The over is won at that moment. You get $21 back, and nothing later in the game changes it.

Team longest TD

Some books offer a longest touchdown line for each team. These lines are lower than the game line, since only one team counts. Teams with mobile quarterbacks can add long runs as well as long passes.

A team with a big-play receiver may get a higher line. A run-heavy team gets a lower one. Check the official play-by-play if the yardage is close to the line.

If a team does not score a touchdown, rules decide whether the under wins or the bet is void.

Common mistakes

They may count.
Ignoring no-TD rules
Under or void.
Betting low totals blindly
Fewer scores.
Skipping line shopping
Lines vary.

Weather and game script

Wind and rain cut deep passing, which hurts the over. Domes and calm weather help. Return touchdowns are rare but often cover 90 yards or more.

A team trailing late throws deep more often, which can add long scores. Blowouts can bring garbage time touchdowns.

Defensive scores and return touchdowns are rare, but they can be long when they happen.

Live betting

Once one long touchdown is scored, the over may already be won. The live line then moves to the next market. Lines are usually posted a few days before kickoff and move with injury news.

If the game stays low scoring into the second half, the live under often shortens.

Set your stake before the game. A single play can swing the result.
