NFL passing yards props: over or under for the quarterback
A passing yards prop asks whether a quarterback throws for more or fewer yards than a set line, such as 245.5. Game script, weather and the opponent’s pass defense shape the result.

How the line is built
Books start from expected pass attempts and yards per attempt. A QB expected to throw 36 times at 7 yards each projects to about 252 yards.
The point spread and total feed this. A team expected to trail throws more in the second half, while a big favorite may run the ball to protect a lead.
Opponents matter as well. Defenses that allow many yards per pass, or have injured cornerbacks, push lines up. Weather forecasts can move a line 10 to 20 yards.
Yards per attempt and attempts
| Attempts | 6.5 YPA | 7.0 YPA | 7.5 YPA |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30 | 195 | 210 | 225 |
| 34 | 221 | 238 | 255 |
| 38 | 247 | 266 | 285 |
| 42 | 273 | 294 | 315 |
Our own sums: attempts × yards per attempt.
Game script and weather
Game script means how the score shapes play calling. A team down by 14 in the fourth quarter throws on almost every down, which often pushes its QB over his line.
Wind above about 15 mph cuts deep passing, and heavy rain or snow makes the ball harder to throw and catch. Domes remove weather risk entirely.
Garbage time counts too. Yards gained when the game is already decided still count, so a losing QB can pile up yards late.

Rules and settlement
Most books need the QB to take at least one snap for the bet to have action. If he is benched or hurt after that, the bet stands.
Overtime yards normally count. Sack yards are a team stat and do not lower passing yards, but a sack still costs the QB a chance to throw.
Lateral passes that go backwards are rushes, not passes, so they do not count. Settlement uses the official league statistics.

A worked example
A quarterback’s line is 248.5 yards at -110. His team is a 6-point underdog in a dome, and the opponent allows 7.3 yards per pass attempt.
If he throws 38 times at 7 yards each, he projects to about 266 yards. If his team leads early and he throws only 30 times, he projects closer to 210.
A $10 over bet at -110 returns $19.09 if he reaches 249 yards. Settlement uses the official box score after the game.
Common mistakes
- Ignoring the spread
- Leaders run the ball.
- Skipping weather
- Wind cuts deep passes.
- Forgetting injuries
- Missing receivers hurt.

01Basics
What is a passing yards prop?
A bet on whether a quarterback throws for more or fewer yards than the line the sportsbook sets for that game.
Do yards after the catch count?
Yes. Passing yards include the full gain on a completed pass, including any yards the receiver runs after the catch.
Do sacks reduce passing yards?
No. In official NFL stats sack yards are tracked separately and do not lower a quarterback’s passing total.
02Rules
What if the quarterback is injured early?
If he took at least one snap the bet usually stands, so an early exit almost always means the under wins.
Does overtime count?
At most sportsbooks overtime passing yards count toward the total, but check each book’s house rules.
What if he does not start?
If he never takes a snap the bet is usually void and your stake is returned. Rules differ between licensed sportsbooks, so read the house rules.
03Strategy
Why does the point spread matter?
Teams that trail throw more, so underdog quarterbacks often get extra attempts late in games.
How much does wind matter?
Strong wind, roughly 15 mph or more, cuts deep throws and often lowers passing totals for both teams.
