MLS moneyline: the draw, 90 minutes and playoff winners

An MLS three-way moneyline covers home win, draw or away win after 90 minutes plus stoppage time. A playoff winner market can cover a different period; read the ticket before using the broadcast result.

Answer first

90s
  1. 01A regulation draw loses a team selection in a three-way market.
  2. 02Stoppage time belongs to regulation; extra time and shootouts are separate.
  3. 03A match winner, series winner and MLS Cup future are different contracts.

Why an MLS draw is not a push

Suppose LA Galaxy hosts Seattle and the regulation score is 1-1. A three-way Galaxy ticket loses, a three-way Seattle ticket loses, and the draw selection wins. The level score is a complete outcome in this market, not an unresolved contest.

The MLS standings award 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a loss. Those league points explain why a regular-season draw can stand; they are not the same as the goals used to settle a match-result wager.

The label moneyline alone is insufficient. A US counter may display three columns or a separate market heading. Read the available outcomes before assuming the two-option moneyline convention used in baseball or basketball.

Sequence

A practical checklist

  1. Step 01

    Read the heading

Find regulation, three-way, match winner or to advance; do not infer coverage from the club name.

  2. Step 02

    Count the outcomes

A visible draw price means the tie is a separate result, not a refund.

  3. Step 03

    Check the round

Regular season, Wild Card and a best-of-3 series pose different winner questions.

  4. Step 04

    Keep the receipt

Retain the accepted price, market title and event identification until settlement.

Stoppage time is still inside the result

A goal at 90+4 changes the regulation score and therefore the three-way result. A goal at 105 minutes in an extra-time period is outside a regulation-only wager. The referee controls added time; the displayed 90:00 is not a betting cutoff.

For an illustrative Galaxy price of +140, a winning $25 ticket earns $35 profit and returns $60 including stake. If the selected club only draws, that three-way team ticket returns $0. The positive odds do not buy protection against a tie.

A draw priced +250 would return $87.50 on a winning $25 stake: $62.50 profit plus $25. These are arithmetic examples, not available prices or forecasts. Always distinguish total return from profit when comparing a counter quote.

Useful terms

Three-way
A market with separate home-win, draw and away-win selections.
Regulation
The scheduled 90 minutes plus stoppage time, excluding extra-time periods and penalties.
Draw-no-bet
A two-team market that refunds the stake on a regulation draw under its terms.
Shootout
A tiebreak procedure after a level match; its winner need not win a regulation ticket.
Series
A group of matches whose advancing club is distinct from a single-match result.
American odds
A price such as +140 showing $140 profit per $100 staked on a winner.
Implied probability
For +140, 100 divided by 240 is about 41.67%, before accounting for margin.
Return
The amount paid including the original stake; it differs from profit.

Playoff formats change the question

MLS playoff rounds do not all use the same tiebreak format. Under the current competition guidelines, the Wild Card and Round One matches can proceed directly from a regulation draw to penalties. Later rounds can have different extra-time provisions.

If a match is 2-2 after regulation and a club wins the shootout, the three-way draw can win while a team-to-win-in-regulation ticket loses. A correctly specified match-winner selection may settle on the shootout winner. Both settlements can be consistent.

Round One is a best-of-3 series. Winning one match does not necessarily mean advancing from the series. Keep the match number, date and market title together rather than treating every price next to the same club as interchangeable.

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 01Assuming a tie refunds

Three-way team selections lose when the regulation result is a draw.

  2. 02Using penalty totals as match goals

Shootout kicks do not rewrite the 90-minute score.

  3. 03Confusing one match with a series

A club can win a match but still fail to advance from the overall series.

  4. 04Treating a quote as a forecast

A posted price includes the bookmaker’s margin and can move before acceptance.

Use the book for settlement and MLS for format

MLS competition guidelines establish how the match or series is played. The accepting sportsbook’s house rules establish wager coverage, abandonment provisions and payment. A league announcement about rescheduling does not by itself state whether a particular ticket remains valid.

Before kickoff, note the opponent, local date, kickoff time and selection. If the fixture is postponed, retain the receipt and ask for the specific postponement clause. Do not assume a different MLS game involving the same club replaces the original event.

The linked Nevada sportsbook floors are places to ask about a licensed counter’s current MLS menu. A sports-pool amenity is not evidence that every match or every draw-no-bet variant is available. Set an entertainment limit before comparing prices.

After the 90 seconds

Questions before and after you play

A 90-second guide cannot cover every table moment. Tap a group, then a question — answers are short paragraphs, not one-liners.

01Before you start

Does an MLS draw push my moneyline?

Not in a three-way market. The draw is a separate winning selection, so either team selection loses on that regulation draw.

Does stoppage time count?

Yes for a regulation result. Referee-added minutes such as 90+4 are part of the second half, unlike extra-time periods.

Do penalty shootouts count?

Only when the accepted market covers them. A three-way regulation result remains the score before the shootout.

02Examples and details

What does +140 return on $25?

A winning stake earns $35 profit and returns $60 including the original $25. A losing selection receives no return.

Is to advance the same as match winner?

No. A series advancement contract can require winning more than one match, while a match-winner contract covers the named game.

Where do I check playoff tiebreaks?

Use the current MLS competition guidelines for the playing format and the accepting sportsbook’s house rules for your wager coverage.
