Pick 3: straight, box and combo bets

In Pick 3 a straight bet must match all three digits in exact order, with odds of 1 in 1,000. A box bet wins in any order, so it hits more often but pays less. Typical $1 prizes are $500 straight and $80 or $160 boxed.

Straight and box bets

Pick 3 draws three digits from 0 to 9, so there are 1,000 possible results from 000 to 999. A straight bet on 1-2-3 wins only if the draw is exactly 1-2-3. Most states pay $500 on a $1 straight, or $250 on 50 cents.

A box bet wins if the digits come out in any order. If all three digits are different, there are six orders, so a 6-way box wins 6 times in 1,000, or 1 in 167. With one pair, like 1-1-2, there are three orders, so it is a 3-way box at 1 in 333.

Triples like 7-7-7 have only one order, so they can only be played straight. Many states do not allow boxing a triple.

Combo and pair bets

A straight/box bet splits your stake into a straight part and a box part. On a $1 6-way straight/box, an exact match pays about $290 and any other order pays about $40. It is two smaller bets in one.

A combo bet plays every order as a separate straight. A 6-way combo costs $6 at $1 each and pays $500 on whichever order is drawn. It costs the same as six straights, with the same return.

Some states offer front pair and back pair bets on the first two or last two digits. These win 1 in 100 and usually pay $50 on $1, about half of stakes back.

What Pick 3 returns

Nearly every Pick 3 bet returns about 48% to 50% of stakes over time. The rest funds state programs and costs. Changing the play type changes how often you win, not how much you get back on average.

Pick 3 is drawn once or twice a day in most states, with names like Daily 3 or Cash 3. Some states add a Fireball or Wild Ball option that costs extra and creates more winning combinations.

Popular numbers like 1-2-3 or 7-7-7 do not change the odds, but if a state uses pari-mutuel prizes, popular picks can mean lower payouts. Most states pay fixed prizes for Pick 3.
