How to bet horse racing online

Same ticket language as a race-book window: track, race, runner, bet type, amount — placed from a funded ADW account while you are in an authorizing state.

Answer first

90s
  1. 1

Confirm ADW is live where you sit

If the online racing status is not legal, stop. See Is online horse betting legal?

  2. 2

Use a hub on that racing board’s list

Match the name on the regulator page, not an ad.

  3. 3

    Fund the account first

Advance deposit means the money is in before the race.

  4. 4

Call the same ticket you would at a window

Track, race, horse or number, win/place/show or exotic, amount.

  5. 5

Keep the electronic ticket like cash

Pari-mutuel prices still move with the pool after you bet.

In short

Key takeaways

  • Online horse betting runs through advance deposit wagering accounts licensed by state racing boards.
  • Only use an account approved for the state you are in.
  • Takeout, the share kept from each pool, usually runs 15% to 25%.
  • Sports betting is a different product with its own licence.

  • Exotic

Exacta, trifecta, and similar multi-runner bets. Same names as the window.

  • Geofence

The hub must refuse you outside the authorizing state. That is the licence talking.

01Mechanics

How do I bet horse racing online in New Jersey?

New Jersey’s online racing status is live, so ADW can exist under that board’s rules. Confirm the current authorized hubs on the racing regulator’s page. Sports betting in New Jersey is a different live status and a different ticket.

02Advice

Is this the same as betting sports online?

No. ADW is pari-mutuel racing. Sports wagering is a separate format status with a separate licence. Mixing them is how people end up on the wrong regulator page.

Is this page legal advice?

No. It translates race-book ticket steps to an ADW account. Authorization is the racing board’s list. Ask counsel for a personal account issue.

03More questions people ask

Which states have legal online horse betting?

As of our October 13, 2026 check, online horse betting is live in 18 jurisdictions: California, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia. Every other state either has no law, has a law that has not launched yet, or limits play to a physical venue. Check the state regulator before you deposit, because launches and repeals happen mid-year.

How old do you have to be for online horse betting?

It depends on the state, not on the app. Of the 18 states where online horse betting is live in our October 13, 2026 check, 2 set 21 as the minimum age and 7 allow 18 or 19 (Illinois, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, Virginia, West Virginia). The operator must verify age and identity before the first real-money wager, so a younger player is refused at sign-up, not at cash-out.

What is takeout?

Takeout is the share of each pari-mutuel pool kept by the track and the state before winners are paid, usually 15% to 25% depending on the state and bet type. Exotic bets carry higher takeout than win, place and show.

Do I need an account with a specific track?

No. A licensed advance-deposit wagering (ADW) operator lets you fund one account and bet on many tracks, as long as your state allows ADW and the track has agreed.
