Why online gambling checks your location

A US iGaming or sports licence is a state licence. The software has to know you are in that state. That check is the geofence — not a bug, and not a VPN puzzle.

In short

Key takeaways

  • Each state licence covers only people who are physically inside that state.
  • Licensed apps check your location before every bet and block you near the border if unsure.
  • Federal law, mainly the 1961 Wire Act, keeps bets inside the licensing state.
  • VPNs and proxies are detected and blocked by licensed apps.

Progress

State first, then the client

  1. 1

    Which state are you in?

The format status is per state

  2. 2

    Is that status live?

If not legal, geofence cannot create a market

  3. 3

    Location check

GPS / IP / app permission

  4. 4

    Ticket or refuse

    Refuse is the licence working

Desk-facts on hundreds of licences store physicalPresenceRequired: true. We do not list those brands here.

Floor rules

Words

Know before you sit

Geofence
Technical check that you are inside the licensing state (or, for on-property, on that land).
physicalPresenceRequired
Desk-fact flag on harvested licences. Typical for live sports/iGaming.
not legal status
No amount of location spoofing writes a statute.

Sequence

If location fails

  1. Step 01

    Confirm the format is live

Sports vs casino vs poker vs racing statuses differ.

  2. Step 02

    Turn on genuine location services

The client is allowed to refuse you without them.

  3. Step 03

    Do not follow VPN threads

That is not a regulator path. This page stops there.

01Why

Why do legal betting apps check my location?

Because the licence is issued by one state for people physically in that state. UIGEA’s in-state carve-out and state iGaming/sports rules all assume location checks. Desk-facts on our licence harvest mark physicalPresenceRequired. A billing address in that state is not the same test.

02Advice

Is this page legal advice?

No. It explains why licensed US products geofence, using state-status statuses and desk-facts. For a blocked account, use that operator’s licensed support or the board — not a VPN forum.

03More questions people ask

Why do gambling apps need my location?

Federal law, mainly the Wire Act of 1961, and every state licence require the wager to be placed inside the licensing state. The app checks your device before each bet session.

Can I use a VPN to bet from another state?

No. Licensed apps detect VPNs and proxies and block the wager. Using one can also get the account closed and winnings voided.
