Are sweepstakes casinos illegal?
In California, operating a dual-currency online sweepstakes game is unlawful under Penal Code §337o after AB 831 (effective Jan 1, 2026). New York enacted a formal ban in December 2025. Minnesota, Tennessee, and Louisiana attorneys general have treated the model as an illegal lottery or unlawful casino-style product. Other states differ. This is orientation, not a 50-state ruling.
Are sweepstakes casinos legal in California?
Operating or offering the dual-currency online sweepstakes game defined in Penal Code §337o is a misdemeanor after AB 831. The Commission also states it never licenses online casinos. Do not treat a homepage seal as a California permit.

Are sweepstakes casinos legal in Florida or Texas?
This plaque does not invent a Florida or Texas sweeps statute. Florida has no commercial iGaming licence. Texas sports and online casino statuses are not legal for those products. For sweeps specifically, read that state’s AG and gaming pages, or ask counsel. We still publish no operator list.

Are sweepstakes casinos legal?
They rely on sweepstakes law: you can get the prize currency free, so they claim no purchase is necessary. Several states, including New York, Connecticut, New Jersey and Montana, have banned them or warned players, and more bills were filed in 2025 and 2026.
Can I lose money on a sweepstakes casino?
Yes. You can spend real money on Gold Coin packages, and redemptions can be delayed or refused under the operator terms. There is no state gaming regulator to complain to.
Which states have legal online casino?
As of our October 13, 2026 check, online casino is live in 7 jurisdictions: Connecticut, Delaware, Michigan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, West Virginia. Every other state either has no law, has a law that has not launched yet, or limits play to a physical venue. Check the state regulator before you deposit, because launches and repeals happen mid-year.
How is a licensed online casino different?
It holds a licence from the state, is tested by approved labs, pays state tax, and must offer limits and the state self-exclusion list.
