Crazy 4 Poker: four cards with a bonus

Crazy 4 Poker gives you and the dealer five cards each to make the best four-card hand. You must bet both an Ante and a Super Bonus. You can raise 3x with a pair of aces or better, otherwise 1x.

  1. 01Ante and Super Bonus are equal and both required.
  2. 02The dealer needs king-high to qualify; if not, the Ante pushes.
  3. 03Super Bonus pays on a straight or better, win or lose.

Key takeaways

  • A pair of aces or better earns the big 3x raise.
  • Medium hands down to king-queen-eight-four still justify a small Play bet.
  • Fold weaker hands; you lose the Ante and Super Bonus.
  • Queens Up is an optional side bet on your own hand.

How a round works

You place equal Ante and Super Bonus wagers, plus Queens Up if you like. Five cards go to each player and the dealer. You fold, losing Ante and Super Bonus, or Play.

The dealer then shows. If the dealer lacks king-high, the Ante pushes and the Play is settled against the dealer. If the dealer qualifies, Ante and Play are settled against the dealer’s hand.

How the bets settle

BetWhen you winWhen you lose
Ante1 to 1 (push if dealer does not qualify)Loses
Play1 to 1Loses
Super BonusPaytable on straight+, else pushLoses unless straight or better

Super Bonus can pay even when you lose to the dealer.

Why the Super Bonus is required

The Super Bonus is how the game pays for big hands. Because it is required, it is built into the overall house edge, which is about 3.4% of the Ante under common rules.

On weak and medium hands it pushes or loses, so it adds swing to the game.

Sequence

Simple strategy

  1. Step 01

    Pair of aces or better

    Raise 3x.

  2. Step 02

    K-Q-8-4 or better

    Raise 1x.

  3. Step 03

    Weaker than K-Q-8-4

    Fold.

  4. Step 04

    Any pair below aces

    Raise 1x.

  5. Step 05

Play Queens Up only for fun

    Higher edge.

The 4-card hand ranks

As in Four Card Poker, three of a kind beats a flush and a straight, because trips are harder to make with four cards. Four of a kind sits on top, then straight flush.

Two pair and one pair rank below straights.

Crazy 4 vs Four Card Poker

Both use four-card hands, but Crazy 4 Poker gives the dealer five cards, not six, adds a qualifier, and requires the Super Bonus. Four Card Poker lets you raise 3x with any strong hand.

Many players find Crazy 4 swingier because of the required bonus.
