Net results on a $5 world bet
| Roll | Pays | Net |
|---|---|---|
| 2 or 12 | 30 to 1 | +$26 |
| 3 or 11 | 15 to 1 | +$11 |
| 7 | 4 to 1 | $0 (push) |
| Anything else | — | −$5 |

Why a 7 pushes
The any 7 unit pays 4 to 1. That covers the four losing units, so a 7 nets zero.
The bet loses all five units on 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10. Those totals come up 24 times in 36.
Chances per roll
| Roll | Ways of 36 | Chance |
|---|---|---|
| 2 or 12 | 2 | 5.6% |
| 3 or 11 | 4 | 11.1% |
| 7 | 6 | 16.7% |
| Other | 24 | 66.7% |
Two fair dice.
The house edge
Over 36 rolls on average you win 26 units twice and 11 units four times, and lose 5 units 24 times. That is a loss of 24 units on 180 bet.
The result is a house edge of about 13.33%. The pass line costs about 1.41% by comparison.

Table etiquette
The stickman places world bets in the center of the table. Toss your chips gently and call the bet clearly.
If your bet wins, the dealer may leave it up for the next roll. Say down if you want your winnings and bet back.
World vs horn
A horn bet uses four units on 2, 3, 11 and 12. The world bet adds a fifth unit on any 7.
Adding the 7 turns many losing rolls into pushes, but only 6 of 36. The other 24 rolls still lose all five units.
The horn bet has a house edge of about 12.5%. The world bet is slightly worse at about 13.33%. Both are far above the line bets.
Common mistakes
- Thinking a 7 wins
- It usually pushes.
- Forgetting losing units
- Four units lose on a hit.
- Leaving it up by accident
- Say down.
- Ignoring the edge
- It is high.
Bankroll impact
At $5 a roll and about 100 rolls an hour, the world bet puts $500 in action. At 13.33%, the average cost is about $67 an hour.
The same $5 on the pass line with odds costs far less per hour, because it settles less often and has a lower edge.
If you enjoy one-roll bets, use them sparingly and keep the stake small. Many players skip them entirely.

- One-roll bet
- Settles on the next roll.
Payout variations
Some tables pay 2 and 12 at 30 for 1, which means 29 to 1. That small change raises the house edge on the world bet. The stickman can also split a world bet into separate horn and any 7 bets if you ask.
Some casinos pay 3 and 11 at 15 for 1 instead of 15 to 1. Read the payouts printed in the center of the layout. Many players think a world bet covers more numbers than it does; it still loses on two thirds of rolls.
If the layout shows for instead of to, your bet is included in the payout. That always makes the bet worse. A $10 world bet doubles every figure: +$52 on 2 or 12, +$22 on 3 or 11, and −$10 on any other non-7 total.
