Key numbers
Buy and lay in four numbers
In short
Key takeaways
- Buying the 4 or 10 beats placing them, which costs 6.67%.
- Placing the 6 and 8 at 1.52% is cheaper than buying them.
- Ask whether the commission is taken up front or only on a win; it changes the edge a lot.
- A $20 buy on the 4 with a $1 fee is the common way to make the commission round.

Edges per bet resolved. If the casino takes the fee up front, every buy edge is 4.76%.
Lay bet edge by commission rule
| Number | Fee only on a win | Fee paid up front |
|---|---|---|
| 4 or 10 | 1.67% | 2.44% |
| 5 or 9 | 2.00% | 3.23% |
| 6 or 8 | 2.27% | 4.00% |
Lay bets bet against a number, so they win more often but pay less than even money.
How the commission works
On a $20 buy of the 4, the fee is $1. If the 4 rolls, you are paid $40 at 2 to 1. At many casinos you only pay the $1 on a win; at others you pay it when you make the bet.
On a lay of the 4, you risk $40 to win $20, and the 5% fee is $1 of the win.
Sequence
Making a buy bet
Step 01
Drop chips in the come area
Tell the dealer "Buy the 10" with the amount.
Step 02
Pay the fee
Ask if the vig is due now or only on a win.
Step 03
Wait for a decision
Your number wins; a 7 loses.
Step 04
Take it down any time
Buy and lay bets can be removed between rolls.
Who uses lay bets
Dark-side players, who bet against the shooter, use lay bets once a point is set. A lay on the 4 or 10 wins two times in three.
The bet stays up until a 7 or the number rolls, so one lay can last many rolls.

Craps terms
Know before you sit
- Vig
- The house commission on buy and lay bets, usually 5%.
- True odds
- The exact odds of a number rolling before a 7.
- Working
- A bet that is active on the next roll.
- Dark side
- Betting against the shooter with don’t bets and lays.
A buy and a lay over 36 rolls
Picture a $20 buy on the 10 left up for a long session. The 10 rolls three ways and the 7 six ways, so for every three wins you expect six losses.
At 2 to 1 the three wins pay $120 and the six losses cost $120. The game is even before the fee, and the $1 vig on each win is the only cost. That is why the edge is so low.
Common mistakes
- Buying the 6 or 8
- Their place bet already pays 7 to 6 at a 1.52% edge, lower than any buy. Place them instead.
- Buying small amounts
- A $1 minimum fee on a $5 buy is a 20% charge. Use amounts where 5% is at least $1.
- Not asking about the fee
- Up-front commission nearly triples the buy edge. One question to the dealer tells you which rule applies.
- Leaving lays up forever
- A lay on the 6 or 8 wins only six times in eleven. Treat it like any other bet with a limit.

01Buy bets
What is a buy bet in craps?
A bet that a chosen number rolls before a 7, paid at true odds. The house takes 5% as a fee instead of shaving the payout.
Should I buy the 4 and 10?
Yes, if you bet them at all. Buying cuts the edge from 6.67% to 1.67% when the fee is taken only on a win.
Is buying the 6 and 8 a good idea?
No. Placing them costs 1.52%, while buying costs about 2.27% even with the best fee rule.
02Lay bets
What is a lay bet?
A bet that a 7 rolls before your chosen number. It pays less than even money because the 7 is more likely.
How much does a lay on the 4 pay?
1 to 2. Lay $40 to win $20, then pay a $1 fee on the win at most tables. It wins about two times in three.
Can I lay a number on the come-out roll?
Yes. Lay bets work on every roll unless you call them off. Ask the dealer to turn them off if you want them inactive during the come-out.
03Commission
Is the vig always 5%?
Almost always, but rounding rules differ. Some tables charge at least $1, and a few round the fee down on odd amounts.
What does "vig on the win" mean?
You pay the fee only when the bet wins. It lowers the edge compared with paying the fee up front.
Are buy and lay bets offered online?
Many online and live dealer craps games offer them. Check the help screen for the fee rule.
