UFC total rounds: how long will the fight last?
A total rounds bet asks whether a UFC fight lasts more or fewer rounds than a line, such as 2.5. A half round means 2 minutes 30 seconds, so over 2.5 needs the fight to pass the halfway mark of round 3.

What each line needs
| Line | Over needs | Under needs |
|---|---|---|
| 0.5 | Past 2:30 of round 1 | Finish by 2:30 of round 1 |
| 1.5 | Past 2:30 of round 2 | Finish by 2:30 of round 2 |
| 2.5 | Past 2:30 of round 3 | Finish by 2:30 of round 3 |
| 4.5 | Past 2:30 of round 5 | Finish by 2:30 of round 5 |

How the half-round rule works
Each UFC round is 5 minutes. A line of 2.5 means two full rounds plus half of round 3, which is 12 minutes 30 seconds of fight time.
If the fight ends at 2:29 of round 3, the under wins. If it ends at 2:31, the over wins.
A fight that goes the full distance and ends in a decision is always over, whatever the line.
Example prices by matchup
| Matchup | Line | Over | Under |
|---|---|---|---|
| Two heavy hitters | 1.5 | +120 | -150 |
| Two grapplers | 2.5 | -160 | +130 |
| Ranked main event | 4.5 | +105 | -135 |
| Mismatch | 1.5 | +180 | -240 |

What moves the line
Finishing rate matters most. Fighters who win by knockout or submission often push the line down.
Weight class matters. Heavyweight fights end early more often, while lighter divisions go to decision more.
Styles matter. Two careful strikers or two strong wrestlers often grind out decisions, which favors the over.

Rules and settlement
If a fight is cancelled or a fighter is replaced, total rounds bets are usually void.
A no contest or technical draw is settled on the time the fight ended at many books. Rules differ, so check them.
If a scheduled 5-round fight is changed to 3 rounds, most books void the bet.

- Half round

- Decision
- Judges score the fight.
- No contest
- Fight ruled void.
A worked example
A three-round fight has a total rounds line of 2.5. The over is +110 and the under is -140. Both fighters have finished most of their wins.
The fight is close for two rounds. In round 3, one fighter lands a knee and wins by knockout at 3:12. That is past the 2:30 mark, so the over wins.
A $10 over bet at +110 returns $21. If the knockout had come at 2:12 of round 3, the under would have won. Seconds near the halfway mark can decide the bet. That is why late finishes in round 3 cause so much drama for bettors.
Common mistakes
- Misreading 2.5
- Means 2:30 of round 3.
- Forgetting decisions
- Always over.
- Ignoring weight class
- Heavyweights end early.
- Skipping replacement rules
- Bets may be void.

Books also sell “fight goes the distance” bets, which win only on a decision. These are close to an over at the top line, but pay differently.
