Tennis total games: over or under the games line

A total games bet asks whether a tennis match has more or fewer games than a set line, such as 22.5. Every game counts, and a tiebreak counts as one game.

How the line is set

Books model how often each player holds and breaks serve. Two players who both hold serve 85% of the time produce long sets and many tiebreaks.

A big favorite usually means fewer games. If one player wins most return games, sets end 6-2 or 6-3 and matches finish in two short sets.

Surface changes everything. Grass and fast indoor courts help servers, which raises totals, while slow clay brings more breaks of serve.

Third sets and fifth sets

A third set adds a lot. A straight-sets win often lands around 18 to 22 games, while a third set adds 8 to 13 more, so the over often depends on one set.

That makes total games tied to the chance of a split. Even matchups with two strong servers are the classic over spots.

Final-set tiebreak rules matter at Grand Slams. Each major now ends a deciding set with a 10-point tiebreak at 6-6, which counts as one game.

Rules and settlement

Retirements are the big rule. Many books void total games bets if a player retires before the match ends, while others settle if the total is already decided.

For example, if the line is 20.5 and 22 games have been played when a player retires, some books pay the over because it was already won.

Walkovers before the match starts void the bet at every book. Changes of venue or surface can also void bets under some house rules.

Tiebreak

Retirement
Player quits mid-match.

A worked example

Two big servers meet on a fast hard court. The total games line is 23.5 at -110 on both sides, and each player holds serve about 88% of the time.

The match finishes 7-6 4-6 7-6. That is 13, 10 and 13 games, a total of 36, so the over wins easily. A $10 over bet returns $19.09.

If the favorite had won 6-4 7-6 in two sets, the total would be 23 games and the under would win by half a game.

After the 90 seconds

Questions before and after you play

A 90-second guide cannot cover every table moment. Tap a group, then a question — answers are short paragraphs, not one-liners.

01Basics

What is a total games bet in tennis?

A bet on whether the number of games played in a match is over or under the line set by the sportsbook.

Does a tiebreak count as one game?

Yes. A tiebreak counts as a single game for total games, so a 7-6 set adds 13 games to the total.

What is a typical line?

About 21.5 to 23.5 games for best-of-three matches and about 37.5 to 40.5 for best of five.

02Rules

What happens if a player retires?

It depends on the book. Many void the bet, while some settle if the total had already been passed.

What about a walkover?

If the match never starts, total games bets are void and your stake is returned at every licensed book.

Do final-set tiebreaks count as one game?

Yes. A deciding-set 10-point tiebreak at 6-6 counts as one game in the total. Rules differ between licensed sportsbooks, so read the house rules.

03Strategy

Which matches tend to go over?

Even matchups between strong servers on fast courts, where tiebreaks and a deciding set are likely.

Which tend to go under?

Mismatches, where the favorite breaks serve often and wins in two quick sets. Rules differ between licensed sportsbooks, so read the house rules.
