Prop bets explained: betting on events inside a game
A proposition bet, or prop, is a bet on something other than the final result: a player’s points, the first team to score, or the number of touchdowns.

Key numbers
Props at a glance
In short
Key takeaways
- Props are priced with a bigger margin than main markets, often −115 on both sides.
- Limits on props are usually lower than on spreads and totals.
- Same-game parlays combine linked props; books price them with extra margin.
- Some states ban props on college players or in-state college teams.
Margin by price
| Prices on both sides | Implied total | Book margin |
|---|---|---|
| −110 / −110 | 104.8% | About 4.5% |
| −115 / −115 | 107.0% | About 6.5% |
| −120 / −120 | 109.1% | About 8.3% |
| +150 / −200 | 106.7% | About 6.3% |
Margin is the implied total minus 100%, divided by the implied total.
Sequence
Read a player prop
Step 01
Find the line
Over/under a stat, such as 24.5 points.
Step 02
Check the price
Often −115 on each side; sometimes skewed.
Step 03
Check what counts
Overtime usually counts; player must play for action.
Step 04
Check void rules
If the player does not play, the bet is usually voided.
Why props carry more margin
Books have less information and less betting volume on props than on main markets, so they protect themselves with wider margins and lower limits.
A −115 / −115 prop holds about 7% of balanced action, compared with about 4.5% on a −110 spread.
Some bettors focus on props because lines can lag behind news, such as lineup changes.
How to compare prop lines
The same player prop can sit at 24.5 points at one book and 25.5 at another. Half a point matters, so compare before you bet.
Prices also differ. An over at −105 at one book and −125 at another means very different break-even rates: 51.2% versus 55.6%.
Injury and lineup news moves props fast. Lines can be pulled minutes before a game when a player is ruled out.

01Props
What is a prop bet?
A bet on an event within a game rather than the final result: a player’s yards, the first team to score, or whether there is overtime.
How are player props priced?
Most use a line with prices on both sides, often −115. Yes/no props, such as anytime touchdown scorer, use moneyline-style prices.
What happens if a player does not play?
Most sportsbooks void player props if the player does not take part. Rules differ for players who leave early. Check house rules.
Are prop bets legal everywhere sports betting is legal?
Mostly, but some states ban props on college players or on in-state college teams. Licensed apps follow the rules of the state you are in.
Why are prop limits lower?
Books have less information and less volume on props, so they cap bets to limit risk.
Are same-game parlays props?
They combine props and other bets from one game. Because outcomes are linked, books price them together with extra margin.
02Where to bet
Where can I bet props?
At licensed online sportsbooks and casino sportsbooks in states where sports betting is legal. Selections differ by book and state.
What are Super Bowl props?
Hundreds of special props for the Super Bowl, from player stats to the coin toss. Many are novelty bets with high margins.
03More prop questions
What is an anytime touchdown prop?
A yes/no bet that a player scores at least one touchdown in the game, including overtime. Prices are shown as moneylines, such as +150.
Can I parlay props from different games?
Yes. Props from different games are independent and are priced as a normal parlay. Same-game combinations are priced separately because they are linked.
