How lines are set

Books use last season’s results, roster changes and player ratings to project wins. The line sits near the middle of that projection.

Public opinion matters too. Popular teams with big markets may have lines set a game or two higher to balance betting.

Lines move in the offseason as trades and signings happen. Betting early can catch a line before news moves it.

Injuries, trades and tanking

A star missing 30 games can cost a team 5 to 8 wins. Health is the biggest risk for an over.

Mid-season trades can change a team. A seller at the trade deadline may lose games late in the season.

Teams out of the playoff race may rest players to improve draft odds. That hurts overs for teams near the bottom.

Rules and settlement

Most books need the team to play all 82 regular season games for action. If the season is shortened, bets may be void.

Play-in and playoff games do not count. Only regular season wins are added up.

Some books settle the bet early once the result is certain, such as when a team passes its line with games left.

A worked example

Before the season, a team’s win total is 47.5 at -110. You bet the over for $110 in October. The team’s star misses 12 games in December.

The team goes 6-6 without him, then finishes strong and ends the season 50-32. The over wins, and you get back $210, a profit of $100.

Your $110 was tied up for about six months. If the star had missed 30 games, the team might have finished near 44 wins, and the under would have won. Health is the biggest swing in season-long bets. Betting the under on a team with an injury-prone star can be a hedge on that risk.

Common mistakes

Counting playoff games
They do not count.
Ignoring health
Stars miss games.
Forgetting tanking
Late losses pile up.
Betting late
Lines may have moved.

Win totals and the schedule

Schedules are not equal. Teams in a strong conference play more games against good teams, which can cost a win or two.

Back-to-backs, long road trips and the in-season tournament can all shape the season. Look at the schedule before you bet a team close to its line.
