Daily double: two winners, one ticket
A daily double is a horse racing bet on the winners of two races in a row. You must pick both winners on one ticket. It pays more than two separate win bets would, but is harder to hit.

Most tracks run several rolling doubles a day.
Daily double ticket costs ($2 base)
| Ticket | Combos | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| 1 × 1 | 1 | $2 |
| 2 × 1 | 2 | $4 |
| 2 × 2 | 4 | $8 |
| 3 × 3 | 9 | $18 |
| All × 1 (8 horses) | 8 | $16 |
Cost = horses in leg 1 × horses in leg 2 × base.
How the payout is set
All daily double bets go into one pool. The track takes its cut, and the rest is split among winning tickets.
Probable payouts show on the tote board before the second race, so you can see what your combo will pay. The final payout is set once the second race is official, and it can differ from the probable payout if late money arrives.
Chance of hitting (rough)
| Leg 1 chance | Leg 2 chance | Both win |
|---|---|---|
| 30% | 25% | 7.5% |
| 50% | 40% | 20% |
| 20% | 20% | 4% |
Chances multiply.
Why it pays well
Hitting two winners is harder than one. If your horses have a 30% and 25% chance, you win only 7.5% of the time.
The pool payout usually beats parlaying two win bets, because the track takes its cut only once.

Watch for scratches

When a horse scratches
If your horse in the first leg scratches, most tracks refund that combo. If it is in the second leg, many pay a consolation based on the first-leg winner.

Daily double terms
- Leg
- One of the two races.
- Wheel
- All horses in one leg.
- Consolation
- A partial payout after a scratch.
- Probable payout
- Expected pay shown on the board.
Daily double vs win parlay
Say each horse pays $6 to win on $2. A $2 parlay would return $18. The double might pay more, because the pool is priced on the pair and the cut is taken once.
The board shows the probable payout, so you can compare.
Many tracks also offer a late double on the last two races of the day. A few pools add a jackpot version that pays only a single winning ticket, carrying over when nobody hits.
Example: 2 × 2 part-wheel
| Leg 1 | Leg 2 | Combos |
|---|---|---|
| Horses 3 and 5 | Horses 1 and 6 | 4 |
| Cost at $2 | — | $8 |
Any of the 4 pairs can win.
Singles and spreads
A common approach is to single a horse you trust in one leg and spread several horses in the other. A 1 × 4 ticket at $2 costs $8 and covers four outcomes in the harder race.
If you have no strong view in either race, a daily double may not be the right bet; a smaller win bet costs less.
Tracks take a cut, called takeout, from every pool before paying winners. On exotic bets like the double, takeout is often about 18% to 25%, depending on the state and track.
Common mistakes
- Picking too many combos
- Cost can beat the payout.
- Ignoring scratches
- Check the rules.
- Using the wrong races
- Read the ticket.
- Chasing longshots in both legs
- Hits are rare.
