Late vs early surrender: the same idea, a big difference
Surrender lets you give up half your bet and end the hand. Late surrender is allowed only after the dealer checks for blackjack. Early surrender comes before that check, so it is worth far more to you.

How the timing works
When the dealer shows an ace or a 10-value card, most US games have the dealer peek for blackjack before anyone acts. With late surrender, you can only surrender after that peek, and only if the dealer does not have blackjack. If the dealer does have it, your whole bet is lost before you get the chance.
With early surrender, you can give up half your bet before the dealer checks. That matters a lot. With an ace up, the dealer has blackjack about 31% of the time in a 6-deck game. With a 10 up, it is about 7.7%, or 1 in 13. Early surrender lets you escape those blackjacks at half price.
This is why the two rules sound alike but are worth very different amounts. Late surrender removes a small slice of bad hands. Early surrender protects you against the single most costly event at the table, which is why casinos almost never offer it today outside of special promotions.
Who to surrender against (6 decks, dealer stands on soft 17)
| Your hand | Dealer 9 | Dealer 10 | Dealer ace |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hard 16 | Late and early | Late and early | Late and early |
| Hard 15 | No | Late and early | Early only |
| Hard 14 | No | Early only | Early only |
| Hard 12 or 13 | No | No | Early only |
| Hard 5 to 7 | No | No | Early only |

The math behind giving up
Surrender costs exactly half your bet. Playing the hand out is worth more only if you win more than 1 time in 4. A hard 16 against a 10 wins only about 23% of the time, so giving it up saves you a little each time.
Over many hands, that small saving adds up. On a $25 bet, a hard 16 against a 10 that you play out loses about $13.50 on average. Surrendering it costs $12.50. The difference is only $1 a hand, but the spot comes up often, so late surrender is worth taking whenever your chart says so.
Under early surrender, the saving is bigger, because the expected loss of playing on includes the dealer blackjacks you would face. Hands like a hard 14 or even a 5 against an ace become worth giving up, since they lose so often once the dealer’s hidden blackjacks are counted.

Where you find each rule
Late surrender is offered at many shoe games on the Las Vegas Strip, in Atlantic City and at larger regional casinos, often on tables with higher minimums. Single- and double-deck pitch games offer it less often. Online blackjack in licensed US states may list it in the game rules screen.
Early surrender was common in Atlantic City in the late 1970s and early 1980s, then faded once casinos saw how much it cost them. Today you may find it only in a few promotional games or variants, where other rules are usually made worse to pay for it.

01Basics
What is late surrender?
You may give up half your bet after the dealer checks for blackjack. If the dealer has blackjack, you lose the full bet.
What is early surrender?
You may give up half your bet before the dealer checks for blackjack, so you can save half even when the dealer has it.
Which is better for players?
Early surrender, by a wide margin. It is worth several times more than late surrender over many hands.
02Strategy
Should I surrender 16 against a 10?
Yes under both rules in most shoe games, because a hard 16 wins less than 1 time in 4 against a 10.
Should I surrender a pair of 8s?
Usually no. Splitting 8s is better against most dealer cards, though a few rule sets surrender 8-8 against an ace.
Can I surrender after hitting?
No. Surrender is only allowed on your first two cards, before you take any other action.
03Where
Is early surrender still offered?
Very rarely. A few promotional games and variants have it, usually with other rules that cost players.
Do online games offer surrender?
Some licensed online blackjack games do. Check the rules screen for late or early surrender before you play.
How do I signal surrender?
Say surrender clearly. Some casinos also use a line drawn behind the bet, but saying it is the safest choice.
